GMATNinja, Bunuel, could you please clarify why both X and Y structure should be used in this sentence? My understanding is that Einstein's theory and the the ability to observe extremely objects are two distinct items in the list. Therefore, it may not be correct to use both X and Y structure in this case. Is it correct that both X and Y structure should be used when we are referring to similar items in the list?

We hope this finds you well.

To answer your question, X and Y actually are similar things here; "Einstein's theory of relativity" and "the better ability...astronomical objects" are both abstract nouns that can be said to have made the field of physical cosmology possible.

C and D : and also = out, no parallel
E : seem very wordy compared to the last two options (A and B), so I wouldnt remove E immediately but there is a good chance it's wrong

Between A and B it's very close, as a non native speaker it was hard for me because it's mostly idiom at this point. I went with B as it is more concise and GMAT like concision. So A is out and E too.

In this question i looked at option B and i was a little uncertain about the parallelism of the two elements because the idiom both X and Y is a closed parallel construction and both the elements are supposed to start with a similar constructio.. X starts with a possessive followed by a noun and Y starts with Noun modifier followed by a noun. can someone explain this a little.

We hope this finds you well.

To answer your query, "Einstein's theory of relativity" and "the better ability to observe extremely distant astronomical objects" are sufficiently parallel, as they are both noun phrases; two elements need not be identical in structure to be parallel.

b/w B and C B is more idiomatically structured.


That cannot be the reason since because of is followed by noun phrases and because is followed by a clause. So in this case because of can refer to the noun phrases.
