Thank you so much.

My reasons for wanting to do a Master’s is to get a job in a foreign country that will prepare me for managerial positions and MBA, and to do well in the courses in order to alleviate possible concerns about my undergraduate GPA (which is 8.16/10 and is not very good for my institution). I faced some personal problems during undergrad which I have overcome now so I am pretty sure I can do a far better job in a Master’s.

Do you believe a good GPA in MS could make up for my bad performance as an undergrad? I am worried about this because the stats show very high GPA for people who get admitted to MBA programs at good schools. How much does this matter?

By the way, I have decided to do MS at a US school that might take me in so after graduation I can have better opportunities than in the UK. Also I will be looking for a software job in the meantime. I have questions about what to focus on in order to progress to managerial positions but I guess I will ask them here in the future.

Thank you again for your answer.

A strong academic performance in a master's program can help, but it is not going to override or erase performance at the undergraduate level. That is because of my earlier point that a master's degree is not a requirement for MBA admissions. Therefore, the schools must compare candidates against the bachelor's degree - a common denominator. You should not get a master's degree just to outweigh your undergraduate GPA.

As for whether it makes sense to help your career, that's a different story. You likely will not get into a managerial degree coming out of a master's program but you could potentially jump a level. It depends on a given company's human resources policy and recruiting requirements.

If you want to buy yourself more time and continue your education than the master's program in the US can certainly help. Put in other words, it won't hurt you!

Thank you. There is also a factor that I might not want to work in the ridiculously low paid jobs in my country for a long time just to gain experience. Also an MS degree is the only sure way for me to get a job in the US so this is mainly why I want to go for this option (I mentioned this as my primary reason: “get a job in a foreign country” but I think I elaborated only the second one. Sorry about that.) In any case, your advice has been very informative. Thank you very much.
