Every Monday, Marina eats one croissant and every Tuesday she eats two croissants. On each subsequent day of the week, she eats a number of croissants equal to the sum of the croissants eaten on the two previous days, with the exception that if she eats more than four croissants on any particular day, the next day she will eat only one croissant. At the end of the week (which runs from Monday through Sunday), the cycle resets, and Marina goes back to eating one croissant on Monday, two on Tuesday, and so forth. If a particular month begins on a Wednesday, how many croissants will Marina eat on the 22nd of that month?

A. 1
B. 2
C. 3
D. 5
E. 6

I encountered this in a Manhattan online free test, and i got discouraged by the "noise"- quite much, i guess? Is this question truly representative of the actual GMAT?

ok pretty simple actually..

M T W Th F Sa Su M T W..
1 2 3 5 1 1 2 1 2 3

So 1st of month is W, note that the frequency repeats every 8th day.. next W is again 3, 22nd day, is one after 21st, 21st is a Tuesday (2) so next day W is 22nd = 3

She eat as follow
Mon - 1
Tue - 2
Wed - 3
Thr - 5
Fri - 1(since she had more than 4 previous day)
sat - 6
sunday - 1 (since she had more than 4 previous day)

so 22nd day of month she will have 3.

No, you don't see these awkwardly contrived questions on the real GMAT. The question above is an attempt to ask a sequence question as a word problem, and the real GMAT certainly does try to ask 'applied' problems about abstract math concepts, but real GMAT questions will find more natural setups for such questions. They also won't use informal phrases on the GMAT like "the cycle resets" (the word 'reset' does not, in its traditional meaning, mean 'return to the beginning', so it's misused here).

She will have the same she had on Wednesday that will be 3
Because 22 itself would be Wednesday.
