FROM Booth Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship: Announcing Three New Entrepreneurship Courses for the 2014-15 School Year
The Polsky Center is pleased to announce three new entrepreneurship courses planned for the 2014-15 school year.

Learn About CodingOffered in the autumn quarter, Application Development will teach Booth students the Ruby on Rails web application framework. In this project driven course, students will build a functional prototype of an idea and in doing so will: gain a higher level understanding of how applications work, learn how to communicate more effectively with developers, and practice the agile development technique. Ultimately, students will be empowered with a better understanding of how software works and how technology can be used to solve problems. The course is designed for a beginner who has never programmed before.

Choose from Two Interdisciplinary Innovation CoursesEntrepreneurial Discovery and User-Centered Design for Entrepreneurs are two separate courses based on our D4 Innovation Approach, which combines entrepreneurship education with human-centered design. D4, which stands for, “Discover, Design, Develop, Do,” takes an interdisciplinary approach to explore real-world problems in complex environments, derive insights, and ultimately design solutions that can make a meaningful impact in the world.

These courses are not sequential and do not have any prerequisites. We recommend taking one or the other, as there is some overlap in material. Additionally, applications are required for both courses. Both classes are open to all University of Chicago constituents and will comprise students, researchers, and faculty from multiple disciplines and units around the university.

Entrepreneurial DiscoveryIn the autumn quarter, Entrepreneurial Discovery students will form multi-disciplinary teams and then will select an area in which to focus their work. Teams will explore real-world needs in problems areas such as education, healthcare, consumer products, and technology. By conducting industry research, performing user-centered analysis, and deriving insights from customer interactions, teams will conceptualize and refine new ways to address these needs, and then rapidly iterate both the problem and potential solutions.

User-Centered Design for EntrepreneursIn the winter quarter, students taking User-Centered Design for Entrepreneurs will focus on one pre-determined topic in order to learn and practice user-centered design methodologies critical for innovation. This year’s problem space is the 21st Century University. With rising tuition costs, a shrinking middle class, the emergence of online learning and a changing job landscape, the University as we know it today is ripe for disruption. Student teams will examine specific processes in the University to discover new patterns and opportunities and design innovations to create value.

FROM Booth Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship: Accelerator Alumni: Where Are They Now? SOCIAL Enjoyments

Leah Caplanis, ‘13, founder and CEO of SOCIAL Enjoyments

Skinnygirl Cocktails is no longer only low-cal cocktail on the shelves.

For three years Leah Caplanis, ’13, didn’t drink alcohol. After being diagnosed with thyroid cancer she chose to live a healthier lifestyle to keep her body in the best shape possible, eating only raw and vegan foods and incorporating holistic therapies into her treatment.  But one summer day, she decided she wanted to enjoy a drink. She purchased one of the few health-conscious products marketed to women, but wound up disappointed in the taste. Leah saw an opportunity to create a natural, low calorie drink specifically for women.

Enter SOCIAL Enjoyments. SOCIAL Enjoyments is a low calorie and gluten-free drink made from all natural sake and organic flavors. Leah, founder and CEO of her company, says SOCIAL Enjoyments offers women “a way to have fun and not worry about the calories, carbohydrates, and sugar that you find in most alcoholic beverages.” The hibiscus-cucumber flavored drink is naturally sweetened. Its four percent alcohol content keeps the calories low; each 10.5 ounce single serving can comes in at just 88 calories.

While pursuing her MBA from University of Chicago Booth School of Business, Leah had heard of the Edward L. Kaplan, ’71, New Venture Challenge. She applied with her idea and was accepted into the program. Leah continued to develop her idea throughout the quarter; she met with mentors and teamed up with a co-founder of Izze sparkling beverages to develop the flavor of the drink.

The resources provided by the NVC were so helpful that she decided to apply to the 2013 Polsky Accelerator Program. After being accepted, she quit her sales job at Nestle and began working full time on SOCIAL Enjoyments following week. “The Accelerator Program provided me with a community and guidance to launch SOCIAL,” she said.

Since completing the program, Leah has raised $50,000 in funding and secured a contract with the largest beverage distributor in Illinois. She hired her first employee and took a small salary for the first time in over a year. This July, SOCIAL Enjoyments launched its first flavored drink in the Chicago grocery market and is now available at Marianos, Whole Foods, Goddess and Grocer, and more. She is also working to get the drink into bars and restaurants around town.

Leah says the mission of SOCIAL Enjoyments is to “offer females empowerment, with the slogan ‘Freedom to Enjoy Life.’” Check the hashtag #findSOCIAL to see where you can buy a SOCIAL Enjoyments drink today!

FROM Booth Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship: Accelerator Program Spotlight: Norm’s Farms

Norm’s Farms began, like the name suggests, on a family-owned 170 acre farm in Missouri. Norman Lenhardt had long worked to protect and preserve America’s farm lands. He hoped that after his passing, his family would honor his legacy by putting the farm into a trust and promise to continue producing food. The family did just that by transitioning from growing soybeans to growing elderberries, a super fruit known for their high antioxidant content and medicinal benefits.

In 2011, Erin Lenhardt, founder of Norm’s Farms, and her father decided to produce jellies, syrups, and extracts using the elderberries from their farm. Her parent’s knowledge of farming combined with Erin’s marketing and design skills allowed them to launch their idea into an actual company.

In 2013, Erin enrolled in the full-time MBA program at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. During her first year, she took several entrepreneurial classes and applied to the Edward Kaplan, ’71, New Venture Challenge (NVC). The NVC introduced Erin to mentors and professors who encouraged her to apply to the 2014 Polsky Accelerator Program. The Accelerator Program provided the Norm’s Farms team with a collaborative workspace where Erin says she is “constantly learning from the other entrepreneurs in the program.” Erin also states she “found tons of support from industry experts and learned a lot about my company and consumers since starting the program.”

Erin and the Norm’s Farms team has made a lot of progress since they began in the Polsky Accelerator Program this summer. They have doubled online orders, are now selling their products in 10 Whole Foods locations and are hoping to sell their products in the Midwest soon!

Recently, Erin published a post for the Norm’s Farm blog on their work this summer and other milestones they’ve achieved this in the Accelerator Program. Check out the blog post here!

Stay tuned for more updates on the Polsky Accelerator Program!

FROM Booth Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship: Accelerator Program Spotlight: Janus Choice

When patients are discharged from inpatient hospital care, they are often provided with inadequate information about post-hospital rehabilitation and care. It is left up to patients and families to find extended care facilities, skilled nurses, and other outpatient care programs. This inefficient process is frustrating.

After personally dealing with the inefficiencies and frustrations of the existing discharge process, current Chicago Booth MBA student Alexandra Goodwin and her partner Darryl Palmer co-founded Janus Choice. Janus Choice is a mobile technology designed to optimize and improve the current hospital discharge processes. It works to reduce health care costs and 30-day readmission rates by promoting patients’ choice and satisfaction with better transitional care.

The only health care company to make it to the finals of the Edward Kaplan, ’71, New Venture Challenge this year, the team decided to continue their momentum and apply to the Polsky Accelerator Program. Their focus over the summer has been to increase membership, foster new relationships, and continue learning about entrepreneurship.

Stay tuned for more updates about the Polsky Center Accelerator Program here!

FROM Booth Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship: Accelerator Program Spotlight: HighStride

Have you dreamt of running a marathon but don’t have the proper training, or even know where to begin? Thanks to a new app called HighStride, runners can access personalized training, conveniently located on a smartphone or computer. HighStride ensures that each runner makes it to her finish line.

Co-founders Aparna Misra and Stefano Galiasso were inspired to create a way for aspiring marathon runners to achieve their goals with adequate training guidance and support. Aparna, a Chicago Booth MBA candidate, was a novice runner when she met Stefano, a running coach who has focused on running and triathlon for the past 10 years. He encouraged and supported her through the training process, in which the pair discovered gaps in training support available to runners, especially those who did not have coaches. Since crossing the finish line of her first marathon, Aparna has remained committed to helping other runners find the correct training and support.

HighStride was a finalist in the 2014 Edward Kaplan, ’71, New Venture Challenge. The team decided to continue developing their business and applied to the 2014 Polsky Accelerator Program. Aparna and Stefano are using their time in the Accelerator to increase marketing for their current app to drive more downloads and increase the amount of active users. They are also wrapping up product development and will be releasing a web-based app where a user can access all of the tools found on the smartphone app and more from their computer.

Since going live in February of 2014, the application has been downloaded over 7,000 times. HighStride’s users are especially actively engaged with the application, accessing the content at least once a week, and the majority engage even more often.

Whether you want to train for a marathon or you are just starting to run, begin your training now by downloading HighStride!

Stay tuned for more updates on the Polsky Center’s Accelerator Program. In just two weeks, this year’s class of start-ups will present their businesses at our third annual Demo Day. If you’re interested in attending, contact Jerome Goodrich.

FROM Booth Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship: It's a Wrap: Third Annual Accelerator Program Demo Day

Thank you to everyone who was involved in the Polsky Center’s Accelerator Program this summer!

Yesterday, the 10 teams, representing 10 areas of the University of Chicago, delivered high-quality presentations on their progress and next steps to a room full of entrepreneurs, investors, media, and other community members (as well as two additional overflow rooms!).

The energy throughout the day was exciting, and once again, the teams raised the bar for the next set of Accelerator Program teams.

Chicago Inno has already run a couple of stories on Demo Day, and we’re expecting more media coverage in the coming days. Stay tuned!

Congrats again to the teams for all of their hard work this summer, and thank you to our sponsors, mentors, and others for their support. You’ve made the program possible.

FROM Booth Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship: Polsky Center Welcomes Seasoned VC to Its Entrepreneur-in-Residence Program
We’re excited to welcome Jason Heltzer, ‘02, to the Polsky Center’s roster of Entrepreneurs-in-Residence (EIR) for the 2014-15 school year. Jason joins Chris McGowan and Mark Tebbe, as well as Jim Gray, another new EIR, to further our mentorship and coaching resources for students.

Jason Heltzer, ‘02, Polsky Center Entrepreneur-in-Residence

Jason is currently a partner at Origin Ventures, a venture capital firm that makes Series A investments in software, advertising technology, and digital media companies, and an adjunct assistant professor of entrepreneurship at Chicago Booth. He has been involved in over 60 venture capital deals and has served on numerous boards.

After getting his start in software development, Jason enrolled at Chicago Booth. He graduated with an MBA in finance and entrepreneurship in 2002. He credits Booth with helping him transition from tech into venture capital.

Driven in this new direction, Jason helped start the annual Venture Capital Investment Challenge and founded the Chicago Private Equity Network to provide information and resources for Booth students and alumni interested in venture capital and private equity. He has been a guest lecturer in the Elfman-Wareham Private Equity Lab since 2002 and a judge for the Edward L. Kaplan, ’71, New Venture Challenge since 2004. In 2011, Jason was awarded the Alumni Angel Award, which recognizes outstanding contribution to the professional and personal development of current Chicago Booth students.

Working with Students

After working on the investing side for many years, Jason possesses a deep knowledge of what investors are looking for in a start-up, and can draw upon his experience in the tech field to know the components of a strong business idea and model.

In his role as an entrepreneur-in-residence, Jason’s primary focus will be to help more Booth students prepare to go into the venture capital and private equity fields, and to work with student entrepreneurs as they start great companies.

As a Booth alum and a venture capital professional, Jason can offer students guidance to help them make the most of their time at Booth and prepare them for success after graduation. In particular, Jason can draw from his personal experience to advise students looking to make a career transition.

To make an appointment with Jason, please email him at Jason.heltzer@ChicagoBooth.edu.

FROM Booth Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship: Kicking off the 2014-15 New Venture Challenge and Social NVC

The Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation and Social Enterprise Initiative invite you to the kickoff of the 19th annual Edward L. Kaplan, ‘71, New Venture Challenge (NVC) and 5th annual John Edwardson, ‘72, Social New Venture Challenge (SNVC) on Tuesday, October 28.

Register for the kickoff now!

The New Venture Challenge is the University of Chicago’s premier start-up launch program: in fact, companies like GrubHub, Braintree, LuminAID, and Moneythink got their start through the NVC. Since launching in 1996, the program has helped launch 100+ companies, which have gone on to raise over $365M in funding. In the last year, these ventures have cumulatively exited for $3B+.The 2014-15 kickoff session will outline the process, rules, best practices, and key dates for the NVC and SNVC tracks, and a panel of past participants will share tips and answer questions. Networking and team building will follow with food and drinks. Register now!If you have an idea for a start-up, you should attend. Don’t have an idea? No problem – many other entrepreneurially-minded students from across the University are looking for teammates. Can’t make it on October 28? A second session will be held at Gleacher on November 8.Questions? Contact Tracey Elder.
