From one official site for english grammer , I have picked up the usage of rather than :

1. I decided to skip lunch rather than eat in the cafeteria again.(rather than is followed by an infinitive verb without to)

Is the first sentence correct or we should use "to eat" ?

2. The results of the study, rather than ending (not end or ended) the controversy, only added to it.

How this usage is justified ?

3. The results of the study added to the controversy rather than ended it.

this one is also correct.

Could someone explain how to use Rather than with verb ?

All three sentences are correct, but i dont understand why we should not use infinitive in first sentence after rather than? What basically rule is ?

a) I like to eat and (i like to) drive.

Though "to" is not mentioned explicitly, its inherent in the sentence.

I think grammatically it will not be wrong to use "to", but it's not the most concise sentence..!!

The site I have taken this from clearly mentiones that you should use bare infinitive, thats what the puzzle is

i think gmat grammar is a bit different ...in terms of usage we need to look at what GMAT does not what other dictionaries do ...because grammar itself is a tricky subject
