Great question - let me explain. So when you go to a school's website and they state the median GMAT, that's a composition of the Q & V. At the moment, AWA and IR scores don't get factored into that. At some point, IR might be, but not for the moment.

So your 740 (not the AWA or IR) is what is used to calculate next year's median GMAT if you get in. That median is then passed along to rankings agencies (e.g. US News) and they use that to assess any changes in rankings.

Because the AWA doesn't factor into your score, it isn't reported, and therefore of less concern. A 740 with a 3.5 is better than 700 with a 6. Does that help?
