Dear all,

I got 740 (Q 49 V41) in the GMAT total score, but received 3.5 in the Analytic Writing Assessment as I accidentally clicked the next button after writing only three paragraphs.

While the AWA score is relatively low, I would like to know if my education and work background can convince the committees of S16 schools that the low AWA score is an accident.

I undertook English Literature as my undergraduate major at the best university for English language education in China. I did well in the English courses and scored 8 in IELTS.

I have been writing and editing news reports in English for three years at China's most important news organization, bagging several top journalism prizes of China.

So, can the aforementioned background information offset the impacts of my AWA score?

Or should I retake the GMAT as the AWA can hurt my application?

Hi there,

First off - CONGRATULATIONS!!!! Sometimes folks on this forum get so caught up in the details they don't take the time to enjoy the good news. YOU HAVE AN AWESOME SCORE! Well done mate!

As to your AWA, it might be a flag at the top 5 or so (because they can be picky when it comes to the admissions process) but overall at the top 16, it shouldn't be the reason you don't get in. As I mentioned above, it isn't reported, so they don't care TOO much. But it is something they look at. You can remedy it with a really strong set of essays - clear, concise, well-written, and engaging.

Don't sweat it too much though - you have the GMAT score, now it's time to get to work on those apps!

hi, glad to hear the comforting information. just one more question, you said the awa is not reported? what does it mean? sorry I'm not familiar with the admission process. many thanks.

Great question - let me explain. So when you go to a school's website and they state the median GMAT, that's a composition of the Q & V. At the moment, AWA and IR scores don't get factored into that. At some point, IR might be, but not for the moment.

So your 740 (not the AWA or IR) is what is used to calculate next year's median GMAT if you get in. That median is then passed along to rankings agencies (e.g. US News) and they use that to assess any changes in rankings.

Because the AWA doesn't factor into your score, it isn't reported, and therefore of less concern. A 740 with a 3.5 is better than 700 with a 6. Does that help?
