I work in a job where writing, sentence correction, and reading comprehension are extremely important. So, without any studying, I got a 44 (97th percentile) on the verbal section. However, my performance on the quant section was abysmal: 29 (22nd percentile). I used to be good at math, but it's been at least 10 years since I studied any of it. So, I found myself having no idea where to even start on questions I knew were easy. For example, this question:

A retailer sold an appliance for $80. If the retailer's gross profit on the appliance was 25 percent of the retailer's cost for the appliance, how many dollars was the retailer's gross profit?

A. $10
B. $16
C. $20
D. $24
E. $25


My test is scheduled for Dec. 22. I've already purchased the Manhattan books, and after scoring so low on quant picked up the Manhattan math foundations book as well. The standard study guide calls for one month of math followed by one month of verbal. If my target score is 720+, should I just keep doing math until my score hits around Q44, which would give me an overall score of 720? Anything else I should be doing?

With a strong GMAT score I think I have a very good chance of getting into a top 10 school. I just need to get that quant up big time.

I would aim for higher than q44 if you want top 10 and you work in what I assume is not a quant-heavy role. manhattans strat guides are a great place to start, and I'd even recommend starting with the foundations of math book if you're struggling with the aforementioned question. As you move up in difficulty on quant, fundamentals are increasingly the name of the game. Don't be afraid to start from square one!

Btw awesome job on verbal, that's incredible without even studying!

I think you should definitely start with the Foundation book. Make sure you do all the drills (it's going to be time consuming a repetitive but you're goal is to master all the concepts so that they become automatic).

After you are done brushing up on the foundations, move on to the rest of the MGMAT books. I really recommend you spend extra time on the numbers property book and the word problems book (specifically the rates/work chapter and overlapping sets chapter).

Once you've done this, your quant score should be around 40. Now you just need to practice applying your knowledge and learning the traps that GMAT throws at you. I really recommend getting GMAT Club's test. GMAT club has a great question bank that's really well organized.

Your final and best tool is the OG guide. Nothing beats real GMAT questions, so sharpen your skills with it.

P.S. I also recommend taking a CAT at least once every week after you've gone through all the MGMAT books.

You have an extremely high verbal score considering that you haven't done much preparation at all. In my experience from teaching students, I find that a high verbal score correlates with the ability to score high on the quant as well. However, you will need to brush up on all the fundamentals and in addition get a hang for the style and format of how the GMAT phrases the questions. Because of your strong language skills you should not have much trouble dealing with the GMAT language on quant questions. It will just be a matter of getting exposed to enough official GMAT questions. I would strongly suggest you to stick with official GMAT content(at least for practice), be it the official GMAT guides or the official GMATPrep software and the various supporting products such as GMATPrep question pack 1, Exam Pack 1, etc.

Thanks, everyone. I'm making progress on the Manhattan math foundations book, doing all of the drills no matter how monotonous they are. I still find myself making a careless mistake here and there, so I think it's a good thing I'm forcing myself to do them.

I'll move onto the other Manhattan books soon, and will focus on them for the remaining weeks before the test. I'll also take your advice and do plenty of practice questions.

Are you not a fan of the Manhattan books, or is it okay to use them with the OG? I have the OG, including the supplemental quant and verbal books. But as far as I can tell I'll only use them when referenced by the Manhattan books.

It is okay to use general books to learn the strategy but for practice I would recommend you to exclusively spend your precious time on official GMAT questions. This is because each student has to eventually recognize the style and preferences of the GMAT test writers and to see the typical traps and distractions that they set up on the exam. And the only way to do so is to practice with official GMAT questions.
