IMO A.
B is wrong implies activity still going on.
C wrong use of two had.
D and E "It" has no reference.

I go with A

A - "their" clearly refers to the bees
B - it is not clear who is releasing the bees. It also kind of change the meaning.
C - change meaning
D - change meaning

IMO C

Lets put the sentence the other way :
their decendents had migrated from as far as north .....in less than ... sounds correct
hence eliminate : A D E
now left out : B C
Among B and C ,C is a better construction using "since" ..."had been "

I looked up explanation for this one and all except A have modifier errors.
