Hi guys! I have a doubt about my admissibility to grad school. I am an industrial engineering student from Venezuela (Catholic University Andres Bello), and will finish my undergraduate this year. I'm planning to go for a master in finance, and my target business schools are ESADE, IE, EADA and some others in United States. I'm worried because i dont have any relevant work experience. I want to course a master in finance because finance is my passion, but i dont know if my background will hurt my application. I will finish my undergraduate being ranked 2nd in my cohort and been in the top 10 IE students of my university for 8 of 10 semesters. My average calification is 16.5/20 (Need to convert that to GPA). I'm worried because i think i dont have enough experience or merits. Besides my academic performance, i have done nothing. No sport/history clubs, no leadership positions among engineering faculty, no extracurricular activities, etc. Schools like IE seem to put an extreme weight on leadership potential and experience. Will my application be hurt because those factors?

Hi jesusoro17,

Well, Its a YES, B-schools look for those who have demonstrated leadership qualities, achievements, impact orientation. They are rather less interested in those who have high GMAT scores and can talk only of an outstanding academic background. Leadership, vision and the ability to bring about disruption through innovation are the key factors for a student to achieve great heights in the profession. Hence, b-schools try to judge you through your extra curriculum and achievements in career life.

I am not sure if you have thought the deferred path, which also is a good option to opt for an MBA program without a pre-work - ex.

Hey Jesusoro17,

You could look into Duke University's MQM or MMS programs which offer both finance and business courses for those with no prior experience. Take a look here and see if this something you would be interested in doing: https://areas.fuqua.duke.edu/finance/ac ... s-program/

If you have any follow up questions don't hesitate to reach out!

Regards,

Hi, Most of the B-schools, especially top one like IE, ESADE, require minimum work experience. Apart from this, they look into your holistic profile like GPA, Leadership qualities, extracurricular activities like volunteering...
