Help required on how to approach DS questions. [#permalink] New post   03 Feb 2010, 12:59
Hi all,

I am preparing for GMAT with an aim of taking up the test in the end of April. I have started with OG 12th Edition and have finished the whole Math Problem Solving section and now doing the Data Sufficiency section. The initial questions on OG was ok, but the questions after Q100 are like too tough for me. Not all are tough, but most of them are. When I try to understand the solution which OG has provided with I really dont think I would have enough time to solve a DS problem (in the actual test) with that approach. The OG solution is pretty much long in terms of the approach and there is too much of assumption that the book makes to solve a problem which I dont have a clue when I try to solve. I dont know if there is a specific approach to DS questions as I guess you would accept that one should not solve the problem to solve a DS question but should use a specific tactic to understand if the information give is enough.

Can you guys help me by providing your valuable suggestion please.....

Hi, Just to clarify what I mentioned above - the math problems were not tough. I am talking mainly about the DS section.

Have you gone through princeton method of solving DS? The AC - DBE thing?
I find it very useful.

Hi - Thanks for the reply.

Since I have started I thought I would learn the basics and learn from OG. I intend to go to Princston once I am finished with OG. I know there is no specific pattern or rule for preparing for gmat and it depends lot on the person, but is my approach to finish with OG not a preferred approach ?

I can not comment on this. OG has all the real exam questions. So if you start with brushing up your basics and then practicing GMAT tricks, it will be easy for you to solve OG.

And if you want to continue doing OG, simply learn this AD BCE tecnique from princeton and solve DS.

Trust me, it will make your life easier. The funda is
if problem statement 1 is true - Ans choices are A or D
if problem statement 2 is true - Ans choices are B or C or E

I think you meant to say "If statement 1 is not sufficient, then the answer choices are B/C/E

Absolutely!

My bad. anyone can easily get confused because of the typo.

SO if statement 1 is sufficient : A or D
and if A is not sufficient : B C or E

hi - i knew the rule you have mentioned, but the real challenge is to get the correct choice.

e.g. Finding A is not sufficient is easy. But to identify whether its B C or E, i need to understand if there is a tactic that i can follow rather than trying to solve the problem and finding it out.....
