Hi,

I have taken GMAT twice
01/2018 Q44 V36 (660)
04/2018 Q45 v31 (610)

For the first GMAT exam, I have read and practiced solely from OG materials. However, for the second test, I have read Manhattan books and did not really practice as much as I did in preparation for the first. I need a 700+ to secure a good spot for MBA.

I found myself quite lost as to how I should approach my studies. It seems I'm stuck in the middle for both Quant and Verbal.

I don't have a very strong Quant background. Scored PS (45th percentile) and DS (70th percentile) [Breakdown Arithmatics (44th percentile) Geometry (61st percentile)]. I mostly survived from testing the numbers.

For Verbal, I find score least on RC and CR (70th-ish percentile) but highest with SC (82th percentile).

I would like to boost both areas. Any suggestions on which online courses are good for Quant and for Verbal?

All ideas would be greatly appreciated!!!

Hi Kanokporn,

GMAC has publicly stated that the Official Score that you earn on Test Day is within +/- 30 points of actual ability. Your 2 Official Scores are in 'range' of one another - and show that you essentially performed the same each time (about 630 +/- a few points). To consistently score at a significantly higher level, you're going to have to make some changes to how you handle BOTH the Quant and Verbal sections.

Before I can offer you the specific advice that you’re looking for, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

Studies:
1) How long did you study for each attempt at the GMAT?
2) Did you use any other study materials besides the books that you mentioned?
3) How have you scored on EACH of your CATs (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)?

Goals:
4) What is your goal score?
5) When are you planning to apply to Business School?
6) What Schools are you planning to apply to?

Thank you for your reply. My answers are as follow:

Studies:
1) How long did you study for each attempt at the GMAT?
A: 4 months and 3 months before my first and second tests respectively.
2) Did you use any other study materials besides the books that you mentioned?
A: I used OGs (2015, 2017 both fullpack and additional review) and all Manhattan verbal and quant books.
3) How have you scored on EACH of your CATs (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)?
A: CAT 1: 630/CAT 2: 210

Goals:
4) What is your goal score?
A: Goal score above 700
5) When are you planning to apply to Business School?
A: Applying next year (for sem starting 2020)
6) What Schools are you planning to apply to?
A: I'm aiming for INSEAD

Hi Kanokporn,

Many Test Takers who use a 'book heavy' study approach end up getting 'stuck' at a particular score level; from what you describe, your prior studies were book heavy - so it's possible that that this has happened to you as well. To hit your Goal Score, you'll likely end up needing to invest in some new, non-book resources. In addition, it's not clear how many practice CATs you took during your prior studies, but going forward you should plan to take FULL-LENGTH CATs at regular intervals and under realistic conditions.
