These are all GMATPrep exams so it's not as if it's an
MGMAT scoring algorithm error...
On my first GMATPrep I missed 9 questions and got a V40.
Then my second, I missed 8 questions and got a V41.
Now on my most recent, I missed 7 questions and got a V38!
I know that there is not always a direct correlation between the number of questions missed and the raw verbal score, but it's still a baffling discrepancy. With 1 less incorrect answer my verbal score dropped 3 raw points?
I wouldn't pay much heed to these statistics. Learn from the mistakes you committed on the test to be better prepared for actual GMAT. Don't waste time analyzing how the algorithm works. Though I admit, if you are taking a test, it's natural to be curious about the scoring algorithm. The problem with GMAT is that they don't disclose the actual algorithm so it's futile to attempt to figure it out.
Think of it this way: if you get all questions correct within the given 75 mins, no matter what the algorithm is, it will have to give you a 51!
