If \(a = \sqrt{2}— 1\) and b = 1, which of the following is equal to \([a^2 + b(b + 2a)] + [b^2 + a(a + 2b)]\) ?

A. 2

B. 4

C. \(2\sqrt{ 2}\)

D. \(2+2\sqrt{ 2}\)

E. \(4+2\sqrt{ 2}\)

\(a^2 + b(b + 2a) = a^2 + b^2 + 2ab = (a + b)^2\)

\(b^2 + a(a + 2b) = b^2 + a^2 + 2ab = (a + b)^2\)

Now, \(a + b = \sqrt{2}— 1 + 1 = 2\)

Thus, \(a + b = 2\)

Hence, \([a^2 + b(b + 2a)] + [b^2 + a(a + 2b)] = (a + b)^2 + (a + b)^2 = 2 + 2 = 4\), Answer will be (B)

Thanks for checking Bunuel. I may have erroneously tagged it GMATPrepNow, but It should fall under GMAT Prep. I no longer have the option to change the tag. Will you be so kind to update the tag for this question?
