Given :
If a man earns $200 for his first 40 hours of work in a week (Per Hour Earning = 200 / 40 = $5)
He is then paid one-and-one-half times his regular hourly rate for any additional hours,

Question: how many hours must he work to make $230 in a week?
The question asks How many hours NOT how any additional hours, so
From $230 target he earns $200 for his first 40hours; remaining $30 (230-200 = 30) can be earned in
$30 /($5 * 1.5) = 4 Additional Hours
Totally 40+4 = 44 hours

Answer Option D is Correct.!

200 dollars for 40 hours means that he will earn 5 dollars per hour. Multiply that with 3/2 to get his new wage which will be 7.5 dollars.

Now since 200 is Fixed and he needs to earn another 30 in variable, we must divide 30 by 7.5(as 40 hours have already been done) which equals to 4.

The TRAP here is not ADDITIONAL HOURS but TOTAL HOURS so the answer should be 40 + 4 = 44 hours.

Quite a common trap in such easy GMAT questions, so it is imperative to re- read the question before clicking on the submit button

Normal Rate = 200 / 40 = 5 / hr.

Overtime Rate = 5*1.5 = 7.5/hr.

We can formulate an equation

40*5 + 7.5 *x = 230.

200 + 7.5x = 230

7.5x = 30

75x = 300

x = 4.

Total hrs = 40 + 4 = 44.

D is the best answer.
