I do not understand - why B ? Little explanation would be suffice.... are you going through "sounds good" or "POE"?

I had chosen B by process of elimination

1. We need "to do" so that it is parallel with "travel". This eliminates A and E.
2. C and D make no sense.
Are there any particular bits that bother you?

(C) If it does as the new airboat is supposed to do
(D) Doing what it is the new airboat is supposed to do
(E) Doing what the new airboat is to be doing

Hi mates,

IMO B

A out: "it is to be doing" is akward, and also present continuos is not needed
C out: "it" has no reference and the construction is akward
D out: same matter with "it"
E out: present continuos is not needed and also the construction is akward

OA and Source?

Cheers

(A) If the new airboat does what it is to be doing sounds awkward
(B) If the new airboat does what it is supposed to do
(C) If it does as the new airboat is supposed to do it has no clear referrent
(D) Doing what it is the new airboat is supposed to do it has no clear referrent
(E) Doing what the new airboat is to be doing sounds awkward

only B sounds good I don't have any clear rule on why I chose it

(A) If the new airboat does what it is to be doing
-->very awkward
(B) If the new airboat does what it is supposed to do
-->sounds good
(C) If it does as the new airboat is supposed to do
-->awkward
(D) Doing what it is the new airboat is supposed to do
-->extremely awkward
(E) Doing what the new airboat is to be doing
-->awkward and sounds terrible

Spoiler: :: OA
B

I can't seem to explain my reasoning for eliminating most of the answer choice except a lot of the options were just plain AWKWARD. D doesn't even make sense!

B for me.

If the new airboat does what it is to be doing -- travel at high speeds undeterred by sandbars, crocodile-infested mudflats, or marshy hippo haunts --it could revolutionize transport on the 2,900-mile-long Congo River.

(A) If the new airboat does what it is to be doing
(B) If the new airboat does what it is supposed to do -- Correct
(C) If it does as the new airboat is supposed to do
(D) Doing what it is the new airboat is supposed to do
(E) Doing what the new airboat is to be doing

If (____), (then) Present.....: then need not be there. Since 'it could revolutionize..." is present tense statement, if should be followed by present tense. Eliminate options (A), (D) and (E). Also, the statements if (A) what (A) should be parallel. So eliminate option (C).
Also, Option (A), (D) and (E) are awkward. In Option (C) 'it' has no referent.

What type of "If" construction is used here?
All options sound weird to me, B and E the least, though.

I will try a little detailed attempt at this question.

If the new airboat does what it is to be doing -- travel at high speeds undeterred by sandbars, crocodile-infested mudflats, or marshy hippo haunts --it could revolutionize transport on the 2,900-mile-long Congo River.

(A) If the new airboat does what it is to be doing
(B) If the new airboat does what it is supposed to do
(C) If it does as the new airboat is supposed to do
(D) Doing what it is the new airboat is supposed to do
(E) Doing what the new airboat is to be doing

Split 3-2 is Supposed vs. No Supposed. Do we need supposed here? YES, because the action is not being performed by the new airboat but the author assume it does. So, that rules out A and E.

In C, the it is ambiguous, because If "it" does as the new airboat is supposed to do would mean that the author is actually referring to another object besides the airboat which is not the intended meaning.

D is actually awkward/redundant because it and what refer to the same action that the new airboat is supposed to do. We don't really need the "it", in this sentences.

And that folks, leaves us with answer choice B as the last man standing.

(A) If the new airboat does what it is to be doing - "to be" is redundant
(B) If the new airboat does what it is supposed to do -- Correct
(C) If it does as the new airboat is supposed to do. - What is "IT"?
(D) Doing what it is the new airboat is supposed to do - "Doing what it is" is misplaced ... needs to be closer to supposed to do
(E) Doing what the new airboat is to be doing - "to be" redundant.Two times "doing"

(A) If the new airboat does what it is to be doing
It would have been better to use" if the new airboat does what it should be doing" but later in the un-underlined part of sentence, we could see that it is talking about the future, so we need something which can tell us the activity/work of the airboat
(B) If the new airboat does what it is supposed to do
"what it is supposed to do" tells us about the "work" or "activity" which the AIRBOAT will perform in future.
(C) If it does as the new airboat is supposed to do
"it" has no antecedent -incorrect
(D) Doing what it is the new airboat is supposed to do
verb+ing usage incorrect-incorrect
(E) Doing what the new airboat is to be doing
same as (D)

Based on meaning, we can eliminate C and E.
"supposed to do" sounds much better than "to be doing"
In D, "what it is the new airboat is supposed to do" - where on earth do we have this grammar structure
