(A) 1

(B) 2

(C) 3

(D) 4

(E) 5

Translating the question in the form of equations we will get
$$x(x-1) = x^2 - 4$$
$$x^2 - x = x^2 - 4$$
$$-x = -4$$

Therefore, x = 4(Option D)

x(x - 1) = x^2 - 4

x^2 - x = x^2 - 4

-x = -4

x = 4

x*(x - 1) = x^2 - 4
x^2 - x = x^2 - 4
- x = - 4
x = 4 (Option D)

I think wording of this problem is a bit ambiguous.

If the result obtained by multiplying a number, x, by a number 1 less than itself is 4 less than multiplying x by itself, then x =

It sounds x is multiplied by some other number which is 1 less than itself. i.e x*(y-1).

It would be clearer if it said: "If the result obtained by multiplying a number, x, by 1 less than itself is 4 less than multiplying x by itself, then x...."

from given data equation is
x(x-1)= x*2-4
solving
x*2-x=x*2-4
x=4
option D
