In the context of rural areas, land inequality is both a cause and effect of assets inequality.

Which of the following would best serve as an example for the above statement?

A. Small land holders make less profit on land than large holders.

B. Large land holders in rural areas exploit the small farmers and that has been the cause of naxalism.

C. Large land holders lobbies and corner major portions of agricultural inputs like fertilizers.

D. Large land holders are able to influence installation of irrigation facilities, and availability of more irrigational facilities enables large farmers to generate surplus and hence buy more land.

E.. Large landholders enjoy economic security that enables them to invest more on land.

D is the only oprion that increases the divergenze between reach and poor. is pretty straightforward.

E says that landers have economic security but is not clear if this affects the other small landers. The first one could buy a land without give problems to the latters

Can anyone explain why can’t we consider option E as the answer

We need to look for option where "Land" is both cause and effect
in D and E : Effect = buy/invest on land
Cause:
D: surplus generated due to availability of irrigation => land is the cause. Had there been no land, irrigation would not be helpful
E: economic security => we cannot be sure that economic security is due to land, it might be land owners have other source of income

Question: land inequality<---->assets inequality

D: irrigation facilities<---->buy more land

E: economic security---->invest more on land. But here we are not given that whether the investment is on same or different land.

Silly but thats how I felt...

Option D Explains the assets in a much more diversified manner than just the economic aspect of Option E.

In the context of rural areas, land inequality is both a cause and effect of assets inequality.

Which of the following would best serve as an example for the above statement?

The Questions stem says that the difference in the holding of land by the land holders is a cause of asset inequality which is correct as large holders will have more land and small holders will have less land. The stem also says that it is the effect of assets inequality which means the large land holders are purchasing more lands from the earnings of their present land and that's how their assets are increasing while small holders might not be able to purchase or they might be able to purchase small lands in proportion. So overall inequality is increasing. This is the reason why land inequality is both a cause and effect of assets inequality.

a. Small land holders make less profit on land than large holders.
This is correct but it doesn't state how the assets inequality is being created

b. Large land holders in rural areas exploit the small farmers and that has been the cause of naxalism.
This might be correct but it explains about the growth of naxalism which is out of scope.

c. Large land holders lobbies and corner major portions of agricultural inputs like fertilizers.
Hmm.. This might be the reason Large land holders are getting fertilizers etc on time and of good quality which ultimately leads to increase in production of the grains etc. but it doesn't explain the assets inequality. Lets keep this and check the next option.

d. Large land holders are able to influence installation of irrigation facilities, and availability of more irrigational facilities enables large farmers to generate surplus and hence buy more land.
Hmm.. This is more appropriate than the last option C, as it clearly states that they have more influence and hence they are able to influence installation of irrigation facilities. Ultimately they have more irrigational facilities which helps them to generate surplus amount of grains. They generate more money and hence able to buy more land. So, this option clearly states the cause and effect of land inequality.

e. Large landholders enjoy economic security that enables them to invest more on land.
Again in this option, economic security of the land holders is being discussed but nothing is discussed about why the asset inequality is being created.

Answer D

Hi Carcass,

Recently, i read about Assumption-Negation-Technique for CR in which rule out the options by negating them and then checking whether they are necessary for the argument to hold or not.
I was wondering if there are other techniques for different types of CR problems which can be used.

Also, if it's not too much to ask, for my RC prep i tried making bullet points para-wise but that's taking too much of my time. And i never refer them while solving problems. Would you recommend any other useful technique to speed up my RC solving.
