International Consulting Schools?

Hjort,

I'd like to use my MBA to get into consulting (oustide the US). In your opinion, which schools offer the best combination of a) number (or percentage) of grads placed at McK/BCG/Bain or other top firms, b) presence of international recruiters, c) size of international alumni base, and d) overall reputation? Any chance you could come up with a top 5 - 7 list? Intuitively, I know which are the best, but I'm wondering how a Columbia or Kellogg compare to LBS or Insead? How about schools right outside te elite cluster such as Ross, Darden, and Duke? How does IESE fit into this framework?

In my opinion, INSEAD is in a class by itself. Other non-US schools are clearly worth considering but INSEAD is tough to beat.

Of the US schools, Harvard, Northwestern, and Penn come to mind as strong contenders.

It is a tougher world for the elite cluster schools since they tend to be smaller and often more regional than their ultra elite counterparts. I would start with Michigan.

Thats what I figured.

Would you consider Ross to be ahead of Tuck in this regard?

What's the history behind INSEAD's conulting "dominance"? Many people consider LBS to be the superior school. Practially speaking, I know that INSEAD should be my dream school, but I'm put off by the fact that its a one year school.

I don't know if I would consider Ross ahead of Tuck, just substantially larger.

Some reasons I believe INSEAD developed as a major consulting school:

1) Emphasis on general management (usually management consulting friendly)

2) Focus on case method (again MC friendly)

3) Multilingual environment works well with intl. consulting firms with MNC clients
