Is it worth it to buy the Manhattan GMAT prep books?

Is it worth it to buy the Manhattan GMAT prep books? [#permalink] New post   11 Jun 2011, 08:27
I just started. I started with the OG12 [it's the only book that I have for review] and to say the least, I could not answer any of the diagnostic problems. I would have to look up the answer of the question, along with the explanation and then spend time brushing up on areas related to that question.

I am looking to score 600-650.

I know for a fact that if I took the test now I would easy score below 400.

Can these books be used for a reference in the future? Regardless of the GMAT test.

Hi Lstadt,

I recently started to prepare for the GMAT and I got the the bundle (OG, verbal review and quant review) and also the MGMAT guides. I assure you that the MGMAT guides will help tremendously. I also remember being in the same position as you. I opened the OG and tried to answer questions but I always stumbled and could not answer them correctly. After going through some of the guides, ( Right now doing the word translation guide) I went back the the OG and I could answer many questions more easily and with confidence. The strength of the MGMAT guides is that they go through the basics that you need to know to do well on the GMAT. They take each topics step by step and explain thoroughly what you need to know for the exam. I have not gone through the verbal books yet. However, as far as the quant part is concerned, I believe the guides are the ultimate resource. What I am doing right now is doing a lot of look ups in Wikipedia and the internet in general to refresh many concepts and laws. Will the MGMT guides eliminate that? That is, will they be my only source for understanding the basics and theories aside from practice questions. I know that I will need to look up more resources for test practice.

I personally think that you only need the MGMAT guides. If you are also rusty in math, you can get the MGMAT math foundation book. I am not planning on getting any other books as I believe that MGMAT guides are more than enough. As for your concern, yes they do cover all concepts and laws that are tested on the GMAT. They even have advanced sections which can give you the upper edge on the exam. There are, however, many other books available on the market which are also wortwhile to take a look at. See this thread :https://gmatclub.com/forum/best-gmat-books-77703.html. You can read the numerous reviews on amazon to have a better idea of the strength and weaknesses of each. But again, if you are just starting and looking for a thorough coverage of topics covered in the exam, investing in the MGMAT guides is the way to go. By the way, you also get access to 6 CATs when you purchase the guides.

I have a very weak math background and I bought the MGMAT math guides, and although I have only gotten through the Number Properties guide so far, it has helped me tremendously to understand the questions better and how to answer them. I can only assume the rest of them will be just as helpful.

The whole bundle is a little too expensive for me, so I just got the ones that I thought would help my specific weak areas.

MGMAT SC is a Def buy to improve basic grammar whether you are giving GMAT or not ;)
