for n item purchasing price = 8n
other charges = 3 + (n-1)*1 = n+2

total charges = 8n + n + 2 = 9n +2

Kim purchased n items from a catalog for $8 each. Postage and handling charges consisted of $3 for the first item and $1 for each additional item. Which of the following gives the total dollar amount for Kim’s purchase, including postage and handling, in terms of n ?

(A) 8n + 2
(B) 8n + 4
(C) 9n + 2
(D) 9n + 3
(E) 9n + 4

Since Kim purchased n items from a catalog, we can create the following expression:

8n + 3 + 1(n - 1) = 8n + 3 + n - 1 = 9n + 2

Answer: C

Let the number of items be 10 then the total price is 10*8+3+9=92.

Now substitute n=10, and see what option gives correct answer. option C is correct.

Total purchase amount excluding the extra charges= 8n
Extra charges= 3+1(n-1)

Thus the total amount= 8n+3+1(n-1)=9n+2

Statement by statement approach -
Kim purchased n items from a catalog for $8 each.----> 8n
Postage and handling charges consisted of $3 for the first item and $1 for each additional item.---> 3+1(n-1)

Which of the following gives the total dollar amount for Kim’s purchase, including postage and handling, in terms of n ?
--->Add the both statements i.e.---> 8n + 3+1(n-1) = 9n+2

Ans C.

P.S. Always re-check what's the question is asking, and then mark the answer, even if it takes 5 secs extra. (@GMATNinja's Tip)

i assigned numbers, let's say n = 5
5 item 8$ each TC = 40$
1st item's cost = 8$+3$=11$
rest 4 item's cost = 4x(8$+1$)=36$
so TC = 47$, when n=5

only C gives us 47.
