For statement I there can be another approach using slope formula of slope between 2 points.
Slope= y2-y1/x2-x1

The statement states X Intercept [ie (X,0)] and Y intercept [ie (0,Y)] are both positive. This means that either both X&Y are positive or negative.
So by applying the formula we can see that
When both intecrcepts are positive,
Slope of Line m=Y-0/0-X =Y/-X
The same goes when calculated using negative intercepts.
Therefore we can conclude that the slope is negative.
