We are given that Molly purchased Brand A binders at $8.00 apiece and Brand B binders at $5.60 apiece and bought a total of 12 binders for $84.00. If we let the number of Brand A binders purchased = a and the number of Brand B binders purchased = b, we can setup two equations:
a + b = 12
b = 12 - a
and
8a + 5.6b = 84
80a + 56b = 840
10a + 7b = 105
We can substitute 12 - a for b in the equation 10a + 7b = 105:
10a + 7(12 - a) = 105
10a + 84 - 7a = 105
3a = 21
a = 7
Answer: D
