My choice, (D).

(A) and (C) "were recently" is not correct here.

(B) sounds wordy, "went with hardly any notice"

It is development in generic research and not generic research that allowed scientist, hence "that" is not required, so (E) is wrong.

I was alomost going to choose E. But D looks the best.
E has another problem besides that mentioned by mba. The part after the comma is not concise.

D is consise and correct
As mba mentioned E is incorrect as "that" is misleading.
Also I think the use of "had been" or "were" is incorrect

Yes buddies, the actual answer is "D", but it was between "B" and "D"
I choosed B in place of D, any rationale to choose D between B and D ?
