D is consise and correct
As mba mentioned E is incorrect as "that" is misleading.
Also I think the use of "had been" or "were" is incorrect

Yes buddies, the actual answer is "D", but it was between "B" and "D"
I choosed B in place of D, any rationale to choose D between B and D ?
