Re: One critic wrote that, if the best-selling guide to finding a husband [#permalink]
I chose D) , ans is B)

Chose D because I mistook the idea as the subject hence singular verb “is”

The verb should be plural because it is of honesty and trust?? (But nouns in prepositional forms cannot be the subject??)

Is it because to a relationship is not idiomatic?? but then what about the plural verb “are”, it does not go with the singular verb “the idea”

Please clarify?

One critic wrote that, if the best-selling guide to finding a husband is right, the idea of the necessity of honesty and trust in a relationship is fundamentally wrong.

(A) the idea of the necessity of honesty and trust in a relationship

(B) the idea that honesty and trust are necessary in a relationship

(C) honesty and trust are not necessary in a relationship

(D) the idea that honesty and trust is necessary to a relationship

(E) the necessity of honest and trust to a relationship

KAPLAN OFFICIAL EXPLANATION:

The original sentence shows you what happens when the passive voice runs amuck. The idea of the necessity of honesty and trust is just ugly and unclear. Since (В), (C), and (D), present you with active alternatives, eliminate (A) and (E). Next, eliminate (D) because the subject is plural (honesty and trust is a compound, plural subject) so the verb needs to be are. Finally, try reading (C) into the sentence and you'll see that it makes no sense. (B) wins again.

The correct answer choice is B.

in answer choice E "to a relationship dosent make sence"

It should be in a relationship.

Choice between to relationship and in relationship is not decisive factor here.
Between B and D, it is matter of is and are. "Is" is correct here.
B is correct.
