transferred is not a verb here so you're reasoning is not correct.

ramgmat wrote:
B- "Unlike the slow process......, the rapid process...." not mentioned. Hence again not parallel

rather than parallelism is a comparison error

ramgmat wrote:
D- Last part of the sentence "...more rapidly when it is warmer", here we do not know "it" refers to air or water

good point

ramgmat wrote:
E- "When" does not refer to any time- awkward and wordy. Also not parallel. Slowly/ rapidly is mentioned as slowly/ more rapid

Can you elaborate? Does "when" have a time reference in the correct option C?

HEAT TRANSFERRED is used as if its the amount of HEAT TRANSFERRED which occurs
more rapidly while its the RATE of heta transferred which is under question
IT is way too far from the initended referrant HEAT TRANF.
OUT

Actually IT refers to heat transferred. But you pinpointed the problem with that.

B. Unlike the slow process of heat transfer between the ocean and the atmosphere when the ocean is colder than the air, heat transfers more rapidly when the ocean is warmer.
"(Unlike the slow......atmsphere) when x" SHOULD HAVE BEEN "(Unlike the slow......atmsphere) which takes place when x"
SLOW PROCESS is being pitted against HEAT TRANSFERS....OUT

well done

TRANSFERRING HEAT is not idiomatic,TRANSFER OF HEAT is
IT is ambiguous..OUT

I think you mean that in THIS CONTEXT transferring heat is not correct. You can use transferring heat correctly

C IMO.

A. Whereas heat transferred between the ocean and the atmosphere occurs more rapidly when the ocean is warmer than the air, it is slow when the ocean is colder.

"it" appears to refer to the air when "it" should refer to "heat transferred between the ocean and the atmosphere".

B. Unlike the slow process of heat transfer between the ocean and the atmosphere when the ocean is colder than the air, heat transfers more rapidly when the ocean is warmer.

I feel like the part after the comma should be something more like ", when the ocean is warmer the process of heat transfer occurs more rapidly."

C. The transfer of heat between the ocean and the atmosphere is slow when the ocean is colder than the air and more rapid when the ocean is warmer.

Seems perfect to me.

D. Transferring heat between the ocean and the atmosphere occurs slowly when the ocean is colder than the air and more rapidly when it is warmer.

"it" appears to refer to air instead of ocean.

E. When the ocean is colder than the atmosphere, heat transferred between them occurs slowly, unlike the more rapid transfer occurring when the ocean is warmer.

"them" doesn't seem correct.

I think in this sentence it refers to the heat transferred ....
When you have a parallel structure such as Whereas X, Y, While X,Y, Because X,Y, etc if there is a pronoun at the beginning of Y refers to the subject of X, as long as both agree in number and gender.

If you remove the modifiers from the sentence

Whereas heat occurs more rapidly when the ocean is warmer than the air, it is slow when the ocean is colder

The main problem is that it is not heat what occurs more rapidly or is slow but rather the transfer of the heat. You can eliminate options A and E based on this.

It is time to let the cat out and the OA for this well discussed GPREP SC is C, not necessarily because it is the best among the lot but because the rest suffer from unacceptable errors, which every one has shred to pieces. Even in C, one might say, that the choice could have a contrasting conjunction such as but in the place of and, since there are two diametrically opposite situations and the text means to bring out the contrast outcome of both the polarized contexts. All the same, no point harping on it and C is still the best.

A. Whereas heat transferred between the ocean and the atmosphere occurs more rapidly when the ocean is warmer than the air, it is slow when the ocean is colder. Tense mismatch
B. Unlike the slow process of heat transfer between the ocean and the atmosphere when the ocean is colder than the air, heat transfers more rapidly when the ocean is warmer. invalid comparison between process and heat transfer
C. The transfer of heat between the ocean and the atmosphere is slow when the ocean is colder than the air and more rapid when the ocean is warmer.Grammatically correct
D. Transferring heat between the ocean and the atmosphere occurs slowly when the ocean is colder than the air and more rapidly when it is warmer. Incorrect grammar usage. It sounds as if someone is transferring heat.
E. When the ocean is colder than the atmosphere, heat transferred between them occurs slowly, unlike the more rapid transfer occurring when the ocean is warmer. Trasnferred says a thing of past as if it will never happen again. Its a continuous process and should be in present tense

Choose C because...
"C. The transfer of heat between the ocean and the atmosphere is slow when the ocean is colder than the air and more rapid when the ocean is warmer."

answer choice has 2 markers "AND" and "THAN"

"THAN" has to present comparison: "when the ocean is colder than the air "
so we are comparing colder ocean floor with colder air. Correct.

"AND" has to have [X] and [Y] structure.
"The transfer of heat between the ocean and the atmosphere

"The transfer of heat between the ocean and the atmosphere is slow when the ocean is colder than the air and more rapid when the ocean is warmer."

why d is wrong

"it" in d can be correct because "it" appear in parallel structure.

As per me, there are two issues with this option:
Firstly,"Transfering heat" is wrong-it seems as an intended activity.
Secondly, "it" is ambiguous.(can refer to air)

(A) Whereas heat transferred between the ocean and the atmosphere occurs more rapidly when the ocean is warmer than the air, it is slow when the ocean is colder.

(B) Unlike the slow process of heat transfer between the ocean and the atmosphere when the ocean is colder than the air, heat transfers more rapidly when the ocean is warmer.

(C) The transfer of heat between the ocean and the atmosphere is slow when the ocean is colder than the air and more rapid when the ocean is warmer.

(D) Transferring heat between the ocean and the atmosphere occurs slowly when the ocean is colder than the air and more rapidly when it is warmer.

(E) When the ocean is colder than the atmosphere, heat transferred between them occurs slowly, unlike the more rapid transfer occurring when the ocean is warmer.

in choice a, "heat occurs slowly" is meaningless. "the transfer of heat occurs slowly " is meaningful
in choice b, "heat transfers" is unclear. which "heat"?
in choice e, "heat occurs slowly" is meaningless. it is wrong to compare heat with stransfer.

but why d is wrong. "it" could be correct because parallelism make "it" refer to " ocean"

Hello thangvietnam,

We hope this finds you well.

To answer your query, in Option D "it" is ambiguous; it is not clear whether "it" refers to "ocean" or "air". Further, the clause "Transferring heat between the ocean and the atmosphere occurs slowly" is needlessly indirect, leading to awkwardness and redundancy.

We hope this helps.

All the best!

Quick question, if you have the time.

Which aspect of the phrase “transferring heat between the ocean and the atmosphere occurs slowly” is redundant?

Thank you in advance.

Hello Fdambro294,

We hope this finds you well.

To clarify, "redundancy" may not have been the best descriptor in this context.

It would be more accurate to say that Option D is simply awkward and needlessly indirect.

We hope this clears up any confusion.

Hi KarishmaB MartyMurray gmatophobia

Why option A is wrong?

Is it because there is no contrast present in the option?

Thanks
