Re: Alan worked 5 hours and finished half the job. Dan joined [#permalink]
Alan worked 5 hours and finished half the job. Dan joined him and they finsihed the job in 1 hour. How long wud have dan take to do the job by himself.

From the stem, we know Alan 's rate is 1/10
Also from the stem, we know Alan and Dan's rate combined is 1/2.

so to find Dan's rate, 1/10 + 1/x = 1/2
so 1/x = 4/10
and x, which is the time it would have taken Dan = 10/4 = 2.5

ALAn will have finished the full job in 10h
(twice two half of the job hence 5h *2)

TOGETHER
they have done half of the job in an hours to do the full job together 2h

hence
A alan time
T together time
d dan time

1/1O+1/D = 1/2
solve for D
found
2/5
