Re: Of the 3,600 registered voters in Smith County who took part in the [#permalink]
ANSWER: C (1) alone is insufficient because it gives no actual numbers to work with. (2) alone is insufficient because it says nothing about the number of female Democrats who voted in favor. If the statements are combined, we see that if 150 male Republicans was 2/5 of the Republican total in favor, then 225 female Republicans voted in favor (150×3/5), and 675 female Democrats voted in favor (225×3), and so 900 female voters voted in favor (225+675)

Of the 3,600 registered voters in Smith County who took part in the [#permalink]

Of the 3,600 registered voters in Smith County who took part in the county referendum on altering the property tax exemption, 2,400 were Democrats and 1,200 were Republicans. What was the total number of female voters who voted in favor of the exemption?

(1) The number of female Democrats who voted in favor of the exemption was three times the number of female Republicans who voted in favor of the exemption.
(2) The 150 male Republicans who voted in favor of altering the exemption represented 2/5 of all Republicans who voted in favor of altering the exemption.

C

Statement 1 alone gives relation of female Democrats who voted in favor to female Republicans in favor. Insufficient

Statement 2 alone gives the number of female republicans who voted in favor

Together they give total female voters who voted in favor.

IMO E. Although Second statement provides the number of female republicans, it does not provide any information how many voted in favor of the exemption. Hence, even by combing the statement we don't know how many females voted favoring the exemption.

I think you are missing something here.

Statement B says "The 150 male Republicans who voted in favor of altering the exemption represented 2/5 of all Republicans who voted in favor of altering the exemption. "

Let the total people among republicans who favored = T

So, as per questions, Males represent 2/5 of T

or 150 = 2/5 of T

or T = 375.

Now, we know the no. of females among republics who favored. But we don't know the number of females among Democrats who favored.

For this, we have statement one, which says Favored female among Democrats = 3 * Favored female among Republicans.

hence, C

150*3/5 =90
How did you get 225? Please explain
