Beyond the immediate funding crisis that the small theater company faces, its survival depends on if it can expand its subscriber base and repair its reputation after the critical and financial failure of its three most recent productions.

A. if it can expand its subscriber base and repair:
IN GMAT, 'IF' IS USED IN IF+CONDITION/THEN+OUTCOME CONSTRUCTION

B. whether it can expand its subscriber base and repair:
CORRECT

C. whether or not it has the capability to expand its base of subscribers and can repair:
PARALLELISM ERROR

D. its ability for expanding its subscriber base and repairing:
'ABILITY FOR" IS UNIDIOMATIC

E. the ability for it to expand its subscriber base and repair:
SAME ERROR AS D

If we use Ability to, Will D be correct ?

E. the ability for it to expand its subscriber base and repair:

What is the wrong with answer D ?

in D, a prepostion"for" is followed by a string of words that describes a complete action, and such constructions are wrong in GMAT.
