When the Spanish first came to Mexico, they inter- married with and absorbed the culture of the indigenous Indians. This policy of colonization through acculturation was continued when Mexico acquired Texas in the earJy 1800's and brought the indigenous Indians into Mexican life and government.

Here it says that Spanish came and integrated with the indigenous Indians, including inter marrying. So saying that Indians resisted Spanish is contradictory.

The clash was between United States and Mexican (parent culture).

Other 4 answer choices aren’t mentioned in the passage.

"When the Spanish first came to Mexico, they inter- married with and absorbed the culture of the indigenous Indians. This policy of colonization through acculturation was continued when Mexico acquired Texas in the earJy 1800's and brought the indigenous Indians into Mexican life and government. "

This is saying that the Spanish first came to Mexico and inter-married. This process continued when Mexico acquired Texas. So, Indians and Spanish had already inter-married prior to Mexico acquiring Texas.

(C) By the time Mexico acquired Texas, many Indians had already married people of Spanish heritage.- true and stated in the passage.

Why isn't it D? It is clearly stated in the passage that they the Mexican-Americans stay in the US after the annexation of Texas by the US.

Where does it say Mexican Americans stay in the US after Texas is annexed? Passage says colonization acculturation continued when Mexico acquired Texas, but doesn't say they stayed or they left. I read the passage as:

"When the Spanish first came to Mexico, they inter- married with and absorbed the culture of the indigenous Indians. This policy of colonization through acculturation was continued when Mexico acquired Texas in the earJy 1800's and brought the indigenous Indians into Mexican life and government. In the 1820's, United States citizens migrated to Texas, attracted by land suitable for cotton. As their numbers became more substantial, their policy of acquiring land by subduing native populations began to dominate. The two ideologies clashed repeatedly, culmi- nating in a military conflict that led to victory for the United States. Thus, suddenly deprived of our parent culture, we had to evolve uniquely Mexican-American modes of thought and action in order to survive."

Re: Traditional research has confronted only Mexican and United States int [#permalink]
Hello Experts,

Why not the answer to this question is D, though i agree to the answer E.

In D, it states that many Mexicans living in Texas returned to mexico after Texas was annexed by US (this is also contradictory with the last line of the paragraph i.e. We had to evolve unquely Mexican-american modes of thought and action in order to survive means they stayed back and didn't return to mexico).

Please explain where i am wrong.

Thanks

(A) In the early 1800's, the Spanish committed more resources to settling California than to developing Texas. Incorrect. California and resources committed are not discussed in the passage.
(B) While Texas was under Mexican control, the population of Texas quadrupled, in spite of the fact that Mexico discouraged immigration from the United States. Incorrect The population is not discussed in the passage.
(C) By the time Mexico acquired Texas, many Indians had already married people of Spanish heritage. Incorrect. This is not contradicted. The passage supports this statement.
(D) Many Mexicans living in Texas returned to Mexico after Texas was annexed by the United States. Incorrect as per the statement "In the 1820's, United States citizens migrated to Texas, attracted by land suitable for cotton.". However it is not said that Mexicans migrated to Texas. Hence this statement does not contradict the passage.
(E) Most Indians living in Texas resisted Spanish acculturation and were either killed or enslaved. Correct. This is clear from the passage that Spanish inter married Indigenous Indians and absorbed their culture. Thus this statement clearly contradicts the passage.
