This post is a part of Project IR Butler 2019-20.
Click here for Details A chemical plant operating continuously has two 12-hour shifts, a day shift and a night shift, during each of which as many as five chemicals can be produced. Equipment limitations and safety regulations impose constraints on the types of chemicals that can be produced during the same shift. No more than two oxidizers can be produced per shift; the same limit holds true for monomers. On either shift, the sum of fire protection standards for all chemicals should be no greater than 13 for health risk, 12 for flammability, and 9 for reactivity. On each of these three dimensions, the standard for any chemical is an integer that ranges from 0 (lowest) to 4 (highest).
Four chemicals have already been chosen for each shift, as shown below:pic(1) :in attachment
Select a chemical that could be added to either shift. Then select a chemical that could be added to neither shift. Make only two selections, one in each column.pic(2) :in attachment
Either shift: phenol
Neither shift: nickel carbonyl
rules:On each of these three dimensions, the standard for any chemical is an integer that ranges from 0 (lowest) to 4 (highest).
(1) No more than two oxidizers can be produced per shift; the same limit holds true for monomers.
(2) On either shift, the sum of fire protection standards for all chemicals should be no greater than 13 for health risk, 12 for flammability, and 9 for reactivity.
the number to each subset item(health、flammability、reactivity、oxidizer、monomer) within each of the six chemical items being checked(chlorine、ethylene、nickel、phenol、sulfuric、vinyl) cannot exceed the number calculate below in order to line with the rules and pic(1) above, or else the chemical cannot be produced
----> or say, we had to examine whether these six chemical items which require to be checked by the question stem has any subset items exceed the minimum number calculate below in order for us to solve this question
day shift:(1)monomer、oxydizer no more than 2oxidizer:
A、C、H、T:only one “yes”, thus in oxidizer subitem “yes” or “no” could both be the answer
monomer:
A、C、H、T: already two “yes”, monomer subitem cannot have one more “yes” /only “no” could be accepted
(2)the sum for health risk no greater than 13; flammability no greater than 12;reactivity no greater than 9health risk: A+C+H+T=10
each of six health risk subitems being checked cannot exceed 3
flammability: A+C+H+T=6
each of six flammability subitems being checked cannot exceed 6
reactivity: A+C+H+T=4
each of six reactivity subitems being checked cannot exceed 5
night shift:(1)monomer、oxydizer no more than 2oxidizer:
A、C、H、T:two “yes”, no more “yes” can appear in the oxidizer subitem/only “no” could be accepted
monomer:
A、C、H、T: only one “yes”, either “yes” or “no” could be accepted in monomer subitem
(2)the sum for health risk no greater than 13;flammability no greater than 12;reactivity no greater than 9 health risk: A+C+H+T=8
each of six health risk subitems being checked cannot exceed 5
flammability: A+C+H+T=8
each of six flammability subitems being checked cannot exceed 4
reactivity: A+C+H+T=7
each of six reactivity subitems being checked cannot exceed 2
to simplify
day shifthealth:3 flammability:6 reactivity:5 oxidizer: yes/no monomer: no
night shifthealth:5 flammability:4 reactivity:2 oxidizer: no monomer: yes/no
if each one of the six chemical items being checked(chlorine、ethylene、nickel、phenol、sulfuric、vinyl )has one subset item(health、flammability、 reactivity、oxidizer、monomer)exceed the number above or cannot meet the yes-no requirement, then this shift, whether its day shift or night shift, cannot establish
---if both day shift and night shift cannot establish, the answer to this item (among the six) will be “neither”; if both day shift and night shift can establish, the answer will be “either”
after calculation, we get that
the item for “Nickel” is neither 4(health/day shift exceed) , 3 , 3(reactivity/night shift exceed) , no, no
the item for “Phenol” is either3 , 2 , 0 , no , no
...no subitem exceed in day or night shift
