Inspired by the circumstances he witnessed and documented during the Polish-Soviet War of 1920, Isaac Babel wrote Red Cavalry, a short story collection that is filled, as are many of Babel’s writings, of brutal and often horrific depictions of war.

Quote:
A) are many of Babel’s writings, of
"is/are filled with" is the correct idiom

Quote:
B) are many of Babel’s writings, with
Correct - as are (filled with) many of Babel's writings - written in an inverted fashion. Content in short compared to content in Babel's writings

Quote:
C) Babel did in many of his writings, with
This sentence seems to suggest Babel wrote Red Cavalry in many of his writings

Quote:
D) many of Babel’s writings did, with
writings don't fill stories - someone does that work. So a passive form as are many of the writings filled with is correct

Quote:
E) was done in many of Babel’s writings, of
"is/are filled with" is the correct idiom

Answer - B

Re: Inspired by the circumstances he witnessed and documented during the P [#permalink]
Other than the idiomatic error fill WITH not for and correct use of "are" since we are comparing an action, I'm really skeptical about the Modifier even though it's not underlined.

In particular, the subject should be the novel not isac since the novel is inspired and documented, not the author

I think it's a modifier error and the quality of the overall phrase is really low
