Re: For integers, a and b, if sqrt ( a^3 - a^2 - b) = 7, what is [#permalink]

For integers, a and b, if sqrt ( a^3 - a^2 - b) = 7, what is the value of a?

1. a^2 - a = 12
2. b^2 - b = 2

B
as mst and fig have calculated
from stat 2, b = 2 or b=-1

from stem a^3-a^2-b=49
hence a^3-a^2 = 49+b
a*a*(a-1) = 49+b

if b = 2
a*a*(a-1) = 51
but 51 = 17*3 and neither of them can be used as a in equation above (and we have to find integer a)

if b=-1
a*a*(a-1) = 48

factoring 48, it is possible to get
48 = 4*4*3
hence a=4

from stat 1, a=4 or a=-3
both can be used to satisfy the stem equation and arrive at different solutions for b as b = a*a*(a-1) -49 where b= -1 or b=-85

I'm getting B as well
the only option for a and b to be integers is if a=4 and b=-1

Yesss :)..... It's (B) :)

This is my favorite silly mistake :) : to forget that we are speaking about integers. As a is in integer, there is only 1 possible solution with the statment 2 :)

Thanks guys :D :)

Muddypaws nailed it.

OA is B. The explanation was scrambled in Princeton Review.
