You can answer this question even without solving for x and y.
We have two variables and one inequation in the question stem.
We need another equation (rather inequation) to solve.
As 1 & 2 both provides one inequation each so either will be sufficient. Save some time by this approach, do not always try to solve for x, y on sufficiency question.
