I believe this was answered a while back. I couldn't find it in the archives.

At a certain fast-food restaurant, each sandwich costs x dollars and each dessert costs y dollars. If $50 is enough to buy 7 sandwiches and 3 desserts, is $50 enough to buy 5 sandwiches and 5 desserts instead?

(1) $50 is enough to buy 6 sandwiches and 4 desserts.

(2) $50 is enough to buy 3 sandwiches and 7 desserts.

My answer is D
Q: 7x+3y<50
Is 5x+5y<50

(1) if 6x+4y<50
from the question 7x+3y<50
Solving these two equations for x and y
7x+3y<50
6x+4y<50

We get x<5, and y< 5

Putting these values into 7x+3y, it would always be < 50, hence sufficient

(1) if 3x+7y<50
from the question 7x+3y<50
Solving these two equations for x and y
7x+3y<50
3x+7y<50

We get x<5, and y< 5

Putting these values into 7x+3y, it would always be < 50, hence sufficient

Both (1) and (2) are sufficient individually to answer the question.

question stim. gives
7x + 3y = 50

the question asks if 5x +5y =? 50
the only way to figure out is by either finding a relation between the two equations that lead to the same answer or by having two equations that would let you solve for the two unkowns: x and y

(1) 6x + 4y = 50
--------------------
two equations, two unkowns .. solve for x and y and see if 5x +5y does give 50 or not
statement 2 is sufficient

(2) xx + 7y =50
-------------------
the same explanation as (1)
statement 2 is sufficient

Answer: D

You can answer this question even without solving for x and y.
We have two variables and one inequation in the question stem.
We need another equation (rather inequation) to solve.
As 1 & 2 both provides one inequation each so either will be sufficient. Save some time by this approach, do not always try to solve for x, y on sufficiency question.
