I was wondering as to what kind of preparation gmatclub members from non-accounting/finance backgrounds are doing?

I am from an engg background, have absolutely no exposure to accounting, finance and any advanced statistics. I was thinking of joining a community college in summer to acquaint myself with them so I dont feel overwhelmed when the program starts in fall.

Has anyone tried the 'MBA survival kit' from mba.com? Will it suffice?
What other options would you recommend?

I am seriously considering taking a course over the summer, but am having trouble doing it because frankly, its not how I want to spend my summer ! I think I will buy the stats book and just walk myself through it. I was worried about it but I've come to realize, surely, I am not alone...

Yes, I too want to vacation in summer...I have to visit India for 3-4 weeks for a couple of must-attend-weddings in the family which clashes with my original plan of attending community college...which brings me to my original question...would anyone recommend the 'MBA survival kit' from mba.com?

What school are you attending in fall ? The schools usually send out a truckload of stuff to look over before orientation.

Michigan State University...I heard they have a boot camp just before school begins, but I dont want to wait that long to find out I needed more than that!

You can browse through the book "10 day MBA" written by a Darden alum. It will give you a good idea of what to expect. You can identify areas in which you may need to do more background reading.

I've said this before, but beware the community college courses. Many of them are simply not rigorous enough to give you the preparation that you need.

Someone at the Cornell admissions office recommended UC Berkeley extension's courses - these are reasonably priced and count as pre-reqs for the Haas weekend mba. I hear stats is a good place to start - I will be taking that one soon.

Any idea how much do they cost ? Is it a video broadcast ? Or online courses that you can take at your leisure ?

I am taking their Basic Corporate Finance course..
its pretty good..

Just google Berkeley Executive development Online.. should get a bunch

They seem pricey at ~750 bucks a course.

Well, compare that to the Cornell stats class I looked at. It was something like 1200 .... or maybe it was 2000? Either way, a stinkin' lot.

I was referring to the online course. I can understand paying more for the classroom experience as there is considerable overhead. Cornell is private so

JayNayak, all set for Chapel hill ? When do you plan to quit and move ? Let me know if you need any pointers on Visa stuff.

Even Kellogg has some compulsory Pre-Term classes. One of them is a credit class!

Hey, I am taking Calculus course from UCB online. 740$ per course. It takes time also (atleast an hour every day). I mean there are 12 assignments to send and in the end there is a test which we need to clear to get GPA. I am given 6 months time to complete these assignments and test.

Imagine the time you need to spend if you are taking 3-4 courses.

Having said that, the course coverage is pretty good. Prof is cool.

But you need to put in lots of time say 3 to 4 hrs per day atleast, if you are taking 3-4 courses.

I second that Idea. It is a nice book. Gives you a brief idea of almost all the major subjects going to be covered in MBA.
