The question states "x is a positive integer". Hence, x cannot be -4.

Given that |-1 - x| ≤ 3, where x is a positive integer. And we need to find what is the smallest possible value of x?


|-1 - x| ≤ 3
=> |-(1+x)| ≤ 3

We know that x is positive => 1 + x is positive
=> |-(1+x)| = 1 + x ( As |A| = A for A ≥ 0 )

=> 1 + x ≤ 3
=> x ≤ 3 - 1
=> x ≤ 2

=> x = 1 or 2 (As x is a positive integer)
=> Smallest possible value of x = 1

So, Answer will be C
