E.

which sends up a global pall of dust, blots out the Sun, alters the climate, and changes the course of evolution....

no issue with //lism

close call b/w E and D for me... will go with D

'sends'/ 'blotting' parallel to 'changes' / 'killing'

what's the OA please?

Only A and E maintain the parallel structrure : blots...,alters... and changes...
But as Paul said "which=earth" in E. So the sentence would mean that

Earth sends up a global pall of dust,
Earth blots the sun,
Earth alters the climate, and
Earth changes the course of evolution by
killing off many plant and animal species

I think it would be more logical if the global pall of dust caused these effects. (as suggested in A)

So I will go for A

With E, I did not see //ism issue but I did only half the job.As Paul mentioned, E implies Earth sending the stuff which is wrong. Good discussion.

Scientists have suggested that once every 10 million years or so a truly colossal object from space cuts through the atmosphere and slams into Earth, sending up a global pall of dust that blots out the Sun,
alters the climate, and
changes the course of evolution by killing off many plant and animal species.

participial phrase modifying the noun in the independent clause.

(A) sending up a global pall of dust that blots
(B) thus sending up a global pall of dust to blot
(C) thereby sending up a global pall of dust to blot
(D) and that sends up a global pall of dust, blotting
(E) which sends up a global pall of dust, blots

A

It is tempting to thinking that "sending isn't parallel." However, blots is what needs to be parallel w/ alters, & "changes" not sending. So A is correct.

I'd go with A too.

E changes the meaning of the sentence. It is the dust that results in blotting out the sun, altering climate bla bla bla. But with E, it makes it sound like the dust is one of the effect just like climate change bla bla bla.

Concept Tested:

Parallelism, Modifiers & Meaning

Original Meaning:

1) Modifier & Meaning: We need a verb-ing modifier, which can be used to modify the previous action of "colossal object... cuts ... and slams". Using any other modifier such as "which" or structure starting with "and" that does not reflect the same meaning is incorrect.
2) Parallelism: There is a list of 3 things: blots, alters & changes

(A) sending up a global pall of dust that blots - Correct

(B) thus sending up a global pall of dust to blot - Wrong: Parallelism. "to blot" not parallel to "alters" and "changes"

(C) thereby sending up a global pall of dust to blot - Wrong: Parallelism. "to blot" not parallel to "alters" and "changes"

(D) and that sends up a global pall of dust, blotting - Wrong: Change in meaning due to "and"

(E) which sends up a global pall of dust, blots - Wrong: Modifier issue due to "which"

My views over this SC problem.

Slamming of object on earth results the pall of dust.....D and E are out.

after this there are two ways to understand this statement.
1. Whether the purpose of slamming of object is to blot the sun.....etc..
or 2. it is the pall of dust that causes further consequences.

B and C, correct use of thereby and thus but both goes along with statement 2 mentioned in my explanation. But this is not the meaning and, hence, not correct.

Remaining is A and is perfect in meaning and grammar.
