Yes (B) is best and I think Paul is right, (B) should be the original statement (Or it should have been choice (A))

Paul, Stoylar and other veterans of the club:

Is it reasonable to request the people who post to also mention the source?

"my interest in the above is that I have taken GMAT twice...and I got not many sources left, other than doing LSAT stuff" ;-)

I also got B which I guess is the original sentence.

I was stuck between B and C and finally chose C (which I know is not correct).

Can someone explain why C is incorrect?

Thanks

Re: Not to be outdone by other private equity firms targeting [#permalink]
hi vijay,

let me giv a try...

C goes '' to be outdone ........ To target......'' the use of ''to'' target is inappropriate here , firstly it disturbs the tense... yes it is in the present simple tense but ... the sentence here more or less goes or conveys the meaning in a continous form...

the idiomatic expression has not been proper ...

the same can be written '' to be outdone by no other privaye equity firms IN targeting .....'' would have been better....

hope that helps! of course I have not much grammer proficiency this explanation was layed more on ''gut'' feel and instinct rather than on basics :-D

OK, Vithal. Nice to see you back. I myself rejoined the forums, and I am full of new fresh ideas. The source of the recent SC series is my head. :wink:

IMO, the reason why B is better than C is because of the logical flow.

B- "[Not to be outdone by] other private equity firms" --> Right from the start it makes it clear that Cryobiotics Group will NOT be outdone by other firms

C- "[To be outdone by] no other private equity firms" --> At first, we believe that Cryobiotics Group will be outdone by some other company but the second part suddenly reverts to a negation form "no other [...]"

B is better on the basis of logical flow
