I had this debate with an HBS admit earlier today, and I would like to know what everybody thinks about this.
Say, you got in at HBS, and you're looking for some cash to help you through the two years of grad school. How realistic is it to walk into, say, Deloitte's NY office and ask for sponsorship? Will McKinsey be thrilled to bankroll your grad school experience at Harvard?

I am no expert on this but unless you already work for them I would imagine it would be an uphill battle. However, if you are in a specialized field you may be able to work it or if you apply for a specific program for a company (where there will be competition), you have a chance. Just because you are going to be going to a top school doesnt mean companies will throw themselves at your feet, they may act that way but per. You may think they will but they still interview people for internships and jobs. If you get an internship from one of those companies, then you might get your second year paid for if you accept a full time offer.

As someone who works at a consulting firm it is not realistic at all. Just because you go to Harvard doesn't mean firms are going to fall all over you (even if it seems that they are). It's still a selective interview process. For my firm you have to have come in directly out of college and you have to apply and be selected for sponsorship. I have, however, heard of banks offering fellowships that you apply to prior to your first year and then you intern with them and owe them 2 years (I think). Most of these programs are limited to underrepresented minorities though. Like River said many consulting firms will sponsor your second year if you intern with them and then sign for full-time.
