Last year I interpreted this as asking us to list one adcom member only.

It seems hard to fathom that they would seek opinions from the sources that you mention. I mean, do they really have THAT much time? The process to go through that - identify if a person is an alum or a student, then try and find out where he/she is, get in touch with him/her to get feedback, all within ~10 weeks seems near impossible, in my opinion.

As far as matching what everyone else puts down - that's exactly what I don't want to do. I want to be different (in a good way). I think showing a little bit of breadth by including an adcom, alum, and student shows how much you've (at least attempted to) connect with CBS.

I'm going with the adcom person I met at the presentation, and 2 alums I've had the most interaction with. Even if admissions contacts them about me, it will be cool. I might name drop the other 3-4 people I've spoken to/exchanged e-mails within the optional essay.

Are you going to seperate them when you list them? For example -

Adcom: Joe. Alumni: Tracy, Larry. Students: Bob

Or just list names only?

Good question. I'll see how it looks later when I view the "print application" version . Regardless, I'll list the adcom first. Also, that being said, they will know who is an adcom member; they just may not know who is an alum and who is a student.

So should I be worried if my uploaded transcripts are "unable to be [rendered] in HTML" in the printable version of my application? I'm hoping they will print out any attachments separately. I really do not want to use their Excel template!

I'm using their excel template because I think it allows them to process your application faster. I'm pretty sure they want to review it in their format, so if you don't input it in the excel sheet then they have to have one of their grunts print out your transcripts and input it into their format

i am applying for Columbia Fall 2009 ED as well :)

heres my profile:

gender - male
age - 24
languages - english, cantonese, mandarin, japanese
undergrad - columbia engineering school
gpa - cumu 3.42 / major 3.6
work - 2 years, developer at financial firm nyc
goal after mba - switch career to the business side, eventually open my own business in asia
sat - 1240
gmat -
1st time - 640 (Q41, V38)
2nd time - 640 (Q47, V31)
3rd time - 680 (Q47, v35)

yes.. 680. i talked to some of you before in my GMAT posting, GMAT was not a very pleasant experience :(

Just got back from our class dinner reception. 539 students from over 50 countries. 35% female. One Olympic Silver Medalist (fencing). 713 is the new GMAT average, and 680-760 is the middle 80%. 3.4 average GPA. UPenn is the most represented undergrad.

UPenn is the most represented undergraduate school in the class of '10?
Alright, I have some very mixed reactions to that. :twisted:

I'm happy to see 50 countries represented, I guess the % of women students is very impressive given Columbia's popular perception as a finance school.

That's a heck of a GMAT range, only 10% of students have below 680. Most schools range is 660-760 or maybe even 650-760.

Not that it changes anything, but the GMAT range probably falls under 660-760 or 650-760 once the J-term folks are added in. This sounds like it's the regular Fall class stats only.

Yes, I believe J-term selectivity is a little lower - around 29% compared to the 16-17% admit rate for ED, RD and J-term combined.

Has anyone done the employment history section yet? In the job duties section have tried to do seperate lines to create something similar to resume bullets but when I make the printable app it lumps it all into one huge paragraph, it deletes all spaces.

For example if I did this

- led teams
- finished project
- got drunk

The printable app reads like this

- led teams - finished project - got drunk

Has anyone else had similar problems? Is there a way to fix this or do we just have to have our duties be one massive paragraph?

The applications get printed out in HTML later, so you could use "<br> and </br>" to create line breaks. Bear in mind CBS says formatting doesn't really matter.

I might try that. I think a huge paragraph is ugly and hard to read. Plus I am just doing a copy paste from my resume so I have resume like bullets (ie not full sentences). If it's going to be presented as a paragragh I probably have to rewrite it right?
