LBS debrief
I applied to LBS in R1 last year. I'm from Australia and LBS is an extremely strong brand in Australia. One of my recommendors is an alum. Last year I was rather naive about the whole process and simply did not understand the importance of the essays. I just assumed that once I write a dry statement of purpose and some work experiences, I was done. However, as we all know by now, that is the quickest way to waste $250 on an app.
But LBS was different, they invited me for an interview despite my awful essays. Not quite sure what attracted me to them - maybe an alumni recommendation did the trick. My interview went really well. My interviewer really liked me and he gave me an awesome reference (I'm still in touch with him). However, that didn't excuse my awful essays.
I believe I had the following things wrong with my essays :
- Poor aims (certainly not distinct enough)
- Dry tone ( like a boring PhD thesis or a very boring business letter)
- Very impersonal (you won't know anything about the real me if you read them)
- Nearly non-existent extra-curriculars.
- During my application, I was in between jobs and that didn't look too good on the resume (even though I had some good work experiences prior to that).
So it was not surprising that they put me on Waitlist after the interview (it just took me a lot longer to realise these mistakes).
LBS waitlists works in a weird way. They keep me on the WL throughout the year up until a few weeks before the classes start (with periodic updates). And so when they finally dinged me in late July 2008 (waitlisted for 8 months), I was already writing applications for 2009 having given up all hope.
But LBS mentioned that they would give me early consideration for Class of 2009 (since I had stuck through the entire waitlist). All I had to do was submit an updated resume. This early decision was to be made September 10th (last night).
So I submitted the resume and I also submitted a cover letter, highlighting the key improvements in my profile. That seemed to do the trick.
Things that worked for me this year :
- I was able to really tie my new role with my stated aim, thus demonstrating my commitment to that aim.
- I had a new, very distinctive, extra curricular.
Hope this helps others in the same boat.
