The ratio of the area is similarity sqared.

For example:

Triangle 1 area: 10
base: 5
height: 4

Triagnle 2 area: 40
base: 2(5)=10
height: 2(4)=8

Similiartiy between triangle 1 and 2 is 1/2 since both triangle 2's base and height are twice the triangle 1's.
10/40 = (1^2)/(2^2)
1/4 = 1/4

Now, going back to the question.

1/2 = (1/sq. rt 2)^2
Similarity between the smaller triangle and the bigger triangle is sq. rt. 2
Therefore S = sq. rt 2 * s.
Answer is C.

Thanks for your explanation.

How do you get portion highlighted in red?:
10/40 = (1^2)/(2^2)

shouldnt it be 10/40 = 5/10?

and i still dont understand how you are using this information to derive sqroot2 as teh answer.
