(A) A child born into a family whose members have a history of drug abuse will probably themselves abuse illegal drugs A child (singular) and themselves (plural). S-V disagreement

(B) Children born into families whose members have a history of drug abuse will probably themselves abuse illegal drugs. S-V disagreement amended; right choice

(C) A child born ‘into a family the members’ of which have a history of illegal drug use will probably abuse illegal drugs. ‘into a family' and 'the members’ do not merge without a connecting preposition The correct expression should be ‘into a family of the members’ .

(D) In those families where members have a history of illegal drug abuse, children will probably abuse illegal drugs themselves. ‘Families’ is not a place; ‘where’ is a wrong pronoun to use in this context.


(E) children born into families in which there is a history of illegal drug abuse will themselves probably abuse illegal drugs; ‘into families in which there is a history’ is not as forthright and crisp as is ‘whose members have a history’ . Hence not appropriate.

i chose E. but daagh is correct. it should be B. daagh is there any other reason to eliminate E other than "sounding right" ? because i am not sure if i could do that in a exam as sounding rite is a matter of opinion, might vary from one person to the other. if E could be eliminated because of any other reason like ||lism(it is not ||lism, i chkd) or something please let us know.

Just a thought...E says history of illegal drug abuse whereas the original sentence doesn't say anything about members of the family abusing illegal drugs specifically. There might be a history of prescription drug abuse.

So, can we not also think of E as changing the meaning?
