a) where the tourist industry is larger than any other Canadian city
b) which has a tourist industry larger than that of other Canadian cities
c) which had a tourist industry larger than any other Canadian city
d) whose tourist industry is larger than any other Canadian city
e) whose tourist industry is larger than that of any other Canadian city

Use of whose is improper. So D & E are out
C uses a past tense 'which had'. So C is out.
A is wrong because it compares the tourist industry of Montreal with other Canadian cities.

I go with B.

This may sound silly, but can you please let me know why you think use of "whose" is not proper ? ( Apart from the fact that in this context, "Whose" sounds weird)

'Whose' is a possessive pronoun which I think is best suited to be used in reference to a person rather than a country.

Montréal, where the tourist industry is larger than any other Canadian city, has neighborhoods entirely composed of souvenir shops and cafes.

a) where the tourist industry is larger than any other Canadian city
b) which has a tourist industry larger than that of other Canadian cities
c) which had a tourist industry larger than any other Canadian city
d) whose tourist industry is larger than any other Canadian city
e) whose tourist industry is larger than that of any other Canadian city

I would go for E

Reason -
Whose - refers to possessive pronoun in objective form to define the city - Montreal
That of - (used in b and e) is used to do the right comparison b/w tourist industry of Montreal and tourist industry of any other Canadian city.

Comments are welcome ! Pls do post OA too.

Its a typical whose and which problem . I am posting a similar question picked from GMAT club only ..Note in the question below the use of whose is taken as "correct "

Before you guys think that I got this one correct .. I must tel you that I picked B ....

Chicago, where industrial growth in the nineteenth century was more rapid than any other American city, was plagued by labor troubles like the Pullman Strikes of 1894.
(A) where industrial growth in the nineteenth century was more rapid than any other American city-- Incorrect
(B) which had industrial growth in the nineteenth century more rapid than that of other American cities
(C) which had growth industrially more rapid than any other American city in the nineteenth century-- Incorrect
(D) whose industrial growth in the nineteenth century was more rapid than any other American city-- Incorrect
(E) whose industrial growth in the nineteenth century was more rapid than that of any other American city

Please explain your answers.....

Most people would think that between "which" and "whose," the correct pronoun to use is "which" because we are referring to an inanimate object.

However, there is a GMAT precedence for the use of "whose" to reference inanimate objects. The rule is that the pronoun "whose" should be used for a possessive antecedent.

eg.

"The play, whose stye is formal, is typical of that period."

Also, the sentence in solution B uses the incorrect superlative form to compare the growth of Chicago and other cities. When we are comparing growth in multiple cities, the comparative form should be something along the lines of"...most rapid," not "...more rapid."

Usage of Which and Whose

Guys, go thru the url posted below, which clearly says that WHOSE can refer to inanimate objects as and when required.

https://grammar.quickanddirtytips.com/wh ... jects.aspx

I would go with D , even if we compare B and D ( excluding which/whose ) , i think larger than any other city is better construction - correct me if i am wrong somewhere

what OA ?

Montréal, where the tourist industry is larger than any other Canadian city, has neighborhoods entirely composed of souvenir shops and cafes.

a) where the tourist industry is larger than any other Canadian city
b) which has a tourist industry larger than that of other Canadian cities
c) which had a tourist industry larger than any other Canadian city
d) whose tourist industry is larger than any other Canadian city
e) whose tourist industry is larger than that of any other Canadian city

IMO E.
all answers are out besides B & E because we need to compare Montreal's tourist industry with that of any other city, and not with any other city.
I would use whose since the tourist industry is the object of sentence and not the subject (which is Montreal).

Edit: also I know noticed that B uses the plural cities and IMO distorts meaning , because the original sentence stated any other city and B only says more than Canadian cities which sounds like some of the cities and not all of them.

What's the OA?

Choices a,c and d have incorrect comparisons. They imply that the industry is larger than any other Canadian city, whereas in fact, the tourist industry in Montreal is larger than the tourist industry in any other Canadian city.C uses the wrong tense.B removes the word 'any' inappropriately. It is necessary to emphasize that the tourist Industry in Montreal is larger than the tourist industry of any other Canadian city.Hence E.

I had missed out the word 'any' while deciding between B and E. Thanks for pointing this out.

Nice one. Forces one to realize that it is important to scrutinize the whole sentence carefully.

Typical Gmat Problem...

I have come back to answer this one. Studies SC a bit.

Montréal is a place, therefore, can not use "which" (which is a relative pronoun that can only be used for a thing). We are left with A, D & E.

A & D compare Montréal's tourist industry to other Canadian cities and not their tourist industries.

E is the correct one.

B- has serious errror.in second part that(industry )of other cities .seems to say that other cities have combined industry-nonsensical
C-industry to city ---incorrect comparison.
D-ditto C
A-Ditto C
E-industry to industry comparison.
whose can modify both people and non living things.

I left B and E. But choose B becouse of "which"
at first time i did not notice the "cities" in B so now i think that correct E.
