Do you agree or disagree that progress is always good? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
Progress is a word that had and will always dominate the life of mankind. Since the dawn of time, progress has directly impacted individuals' lifestyle, their way of thinking. Progress is evolution and it is what brought us to the point we stand today. But is progress always good? Will it influence our life in a better or worse way? I do not consider that this subject is white or black, but gray. In the next essay I will offer arguments that stands for both of the above issues.
To start with, the computer represents one of the most important invention from the last century. Creating this machine has totally changed our lives from all the points of view. They are used in social life, business, medical, economical, juridical, research fields and so forth. People can talk and see each other even they are living in different parts of the world. For instance, I have moved to another country two years ago. Thanks to multiple applications I can talk to my friends and family whenever I want. The connection is high quality and we can see each other as if we are in the same room.
Another positive argument is in the field of medical science. Due to advanced computers, many diagnosis, that in the past could not be seen, can be located and treated successfully. Also innovative surgeries bring hope for countless patients. In Italy, there is a doctor who plans to make the first head transplant. Even though it seems unreachable now, if it proves to be achievable, it could change the life of thousands of persons who cannot use their body.
Unfortunately there are negative aspects also. Nowadays surfing the Internet has become the new oxygen of humanity. Either it is used for shopping, paying bills or socializing, people become addicted to technology. This can impact our social life and mental health. Last week I read about a teenager who killed herself because she was the victim of hundreds of mean messages from her colleagues. Exposing her on social media made her even more vulnerable in front of these bullying messages, facing public humiliation. Actually, it is not first time when I read about this kind of online harassment and sadly the repercussions can be fatal.
These being said, I think that people should never think to stop the process of progress. They should take it to the next level, evolving in a direction where negative consequences can be minimized. I am sure that there will always be negative consequences, but this is life about: we cannot be happy if we do not know what pain is.
