I have a doubt. We always use apastrophe (') after the plural noun eg if we say of many teachers then it is teachers' but for children it is children's and not childrens'. Why is this so? I know this sounds very basic but I want to clear my doubt.

I suppose it's because children is plural by itself ("childrens" is obviously incorrect)
To put it in an equation (equating the count on both sides): Child = Teacher Hence, Child's = Teacher's
Similarly, Children = Teachers Hence, Children's = Teachers'
If suffix S makes a noun plural then Apastrophe is always after this S. ex: teachers', students' In any plural noun that doesn't end in (S) the Apastrophe is before S. ex: children's, people's
