Start of course : September 2013

GMAT : 710 (48, 38)

Graduate : BE in Information Science From PESIT, Visveswaraya Technology University.
Graduate Score : 76%

Work Experience : 4 years

* Working as a Project Manager in an IT major mentoring 8 direct-reports and handling Recruitment, Performance Appraisals and Budget proposals. (Grew team from 2 members (including me) to 12 members in less than 2 years)


* Simultaneously gained Business work experience & knowledge in Export/Import; E-Scrap; Mining; Taxation matters; Corporate law

Community Service

* Co-founder of the school alumni fund which caters to financially-weak and meritorious students

Extra Curricular

* Traveled and set foot in 16 different countries ranging in 3 continents for both business and pleasure

Post MBA Goal :

* Long-term : Want to start an international business of Electronic Scrap recycling
* Short-term : Be an Operations consultant and gain knowledge/experience which will help me in my long-term goal

My Questions :

* I want to apply to only US schools. What should be my target schools? What are Realistic, Safe and Sure schools for me?
* What are my chances of getting into these start up schools?
* How are the prospects of Scholarships?
* Should I retake my GMAT (target >740) to get into the Top 10 schools?
* What is the scope / future prospects of Operations consulting?

Lots of good questions!

I think your profile is pretty good. You've got competitive academic scores and good, business-oriented professional leadership experience. I also like that you demonstrate your entrepreneurial spirit through the scholarship fund you founded. I'd say you could reach for schools like University of Michigan and Duke, target schools like UVA and Cornell, and include some safer schools like UCLA and maybe Babson given your entrepreneurial interest. Given your interest in start-up oriented programs, you might look into UC Berkeley, UCLA, USC on the west coast. Could also look at NYU and Tuck. Unfortunately, there is no such thing as a "sure" school, but I think USC would be quite safe.

Scholarship opportunities vary by program. You'll have to research each school's options independently. Typically scholarships are given based on merit, hardship, etc.

I don't think you need to retake the GMAT. Better to spend time on the rest of the application.

I'm not too up to speed on the operations industry trends, unfortunately, but operations is a pretty specialized skill that is invaluable at most companies. I don't have any data to point you to though -- I suggest you look at placement stats for your target schools over the past couple years and see if there's been a rise/fall in students taking jobs in that field.

Hi,

The fact that you worked in your family business alongside your fulltime job is great, and I'm sure you'll have great stories to draw from there. However, I don't think you can position it as your own business if, in fact, another family member founded it - that would be unethical. It's pretty standard that people coming from families that have businesses have supported the business in some way (part time or full time). It's impressive of course, and especially if you made a significant impact in the business, but it's not the equivalent of starting your own business... so, I think it will carry some weight, but not a ton. I wouldn't worry about the ethical part of it. Working part-time (evening and weekends) to support your family's business probably didn't violate your employment contract...

Definitely include your family business experience on your resume. I think you could pick one school like Kellogg or Haas to apply to, but it's not where I would cluster around that tier - consider it a reach.

Thanks Mili for the wonderful reply.
1. Since I have a business background that I developed side-by-side, wouldn't that stand out in my profile?
Can I target to schools such as Kellogg, Haas?
2. How should I showcase my business along with the Project management experience that I have? Should it be on resume? or just on the essays?
3. Since I had managed to do both IT Project management and Family business, would this backfire? (on ethical grounds)

Hi Mili, thanks for your wishes. Its in no way my own business, though I did explore and research, quite a lot of options and possibilities, I could not start my own business. I could improve my family business with my skills, however.

Thanks for your advice. I plan to apply 2 in top10, 2 in 10-18, and 2 below.
(mostly : Haas, Kellogg, Duke, Ross, USC, UNC)
Would that be a good plan?

Hi Mili,

One dilemma I am in is regarding the Letter of Recommendation :
Apart from the LOR from my immediate manager in the company that I work for (full time), I can get a Letter of Recommendation from a senior manager (2nd to CEO) of the only Copper mining company in India. I have interacted a lot with him over past 4 years for my family business and he will surely have a word or two of praise for me. :)
Would it be okay to take a LOR from him ?
(One from my manager and one from him)

Hi,

I think your school list is well balanced. Good job! As for LORs - definitely take one from your immediate supervisor. The copper mining exec could be strong, as long as he has an intimate view of your professional development over the years. Ideally, your recommendations come from superiors who have worked with you/witnessed your development on a day-to-day level over time. So, really, it depends how much interaction you've really had with him. Also, if he's a family friend, then I'd advise against it.

Thanks for the response. I looked the school insider guides, they most certainly should be useful.
One question regarding the goals essay is

How does the adcom look at applicants who have dual experiences, like that of mine? Should I talk about my success in both on my Goals Essay? or just one of the two?

You'll really have to find that narrative that fits with your goals story. Perhaps they both belong, perhaps only one does.
