GPA: 3.33
School/Major: Top 5 US Engineering School, Industrial Engineering. As in calculus, prob, stat, and other math courses. Bs and some Cs in advanced engineering courses.
GMAT: 760, 49 Q and 46 V
Work Experience: 1 year as a tech consultant at a software company, 2 years as a strategy consultant at Accenture, promoted after one year (normal is 2-3).
Extra Curricular Activities: Currently part of a program to mentor college students at my undergrad alma mater. Also part of a diversity outreach mentoring program through work. Recently started volunteering regularly at an organization that helps refugees assimilate in the US. "Ad-hoc" volunteering at food banks, animal shelters, and tree-planting events. Was the head of community service committee for Residence Life (RAs) in college.
Gender/Ethnicity/Facts: Male. Bangladeshi immigrant (citizen now). Moved to the US as a kid because parents thought my siblings and I would have better educational opportunities if we grew up in the US school systems. Parents work in "unskilled" retail jobs and we were very poor when I was young.
Goals/Reason for MBA: Leverage experience working in operations strategy to help transform companies in terms of costs, efficiency, and adaptability to new processes and technologies. I understand that I can do this in consulting, but I feel it would be more impactful to do this as part of the organization in their corporate strategy group.
Target Schools: HBS, Stanford, Wharton, Booth, Columbia, Sloan, Kellogg (aiming high, I know)
I'm planning on applying during round 1 and 2. Do I have a good shot at these schools? Any glaring weaknesses? Anything I can work on between now and then?
Hey there dude!
Good to hear from you,
So the short of it is overall you have a very good profile, but I would advise you to spread out your schools a bit more (over the Top 20). Your GMAT is awesome! But your GPA is so-so, and Accenture, although good, is not MBB. So it's gonna get real competitive for you in the top 5 schools.
My first question to try and make the most out of your profile would be: What else ya got?!
I mean good job + good GMAT + good school is like the minimum of Top schools - but then: what's your story? what's your extras? who are you? what do you want? what volunteer work have you done? anything else??? It's the things that make you awesome and unique that will push you over into Top 5 schools.
I hope this helps, and if you have any other questions or comments lemme know!
Best,
Jon
