Hi,

I would really appreciate if you could estimate my odds. My profile is a bit rare in this forum since I've never worked for well-known companies. I'm a kind of enterpreneur. Let me explain.

- Spanish, 27 years old, male.
- B.S IT Engineering in a top tier university of Spain (I don't know my gpa, but i was ranked on 20% of the class).
- 730 on GMAT (Q:49, V:41) just taken once.
- 107 on TOEFL.
- Work experience: 2 years as a IT Engineer in a small firm. 2 years in a mobile services related start-up. We were only 4 people when we founded it, and now we have grown until 20. We rose 2M€ in a first round of investment, and currently we are waiting for a second one. Nowadays, the company operates in Spain, Latam and Uk.
- Extracurricular: I have led a group of 4 engineers to develop an Iphone/Android social app in our free time.

- Target US-Schools: (Tier1) MIT, CBS, (Tier2) Berkeley, NYU.
- Target Non-US-Schools: IESE, LBS.
- Post MBA Goal: I want to switch my career. I would like to enter in a top strategic consulting firm such as BCG o McK. However, I'm also interested in other fields (private equity and banking).

The thing that really puzzles me is my work profile. I don't know if somebody with my work experience (start-up and small firms) could get into a a top US B-School. What should I do in order to improve my application?

You should not be too concerned about not having a big brand name on your resume. While a known brand brings a level of visibility and perspective about someone's work experience, being an entrepreneur has its own strength. You will have more leadership examples and initiatives that, if spun the right way, can be very impressive. Your work experience, for sure, will not be counted against you, however, it is upto you whether you treat it as a weakness or a strength. No points for guessing which approach you should take!

Interest areas are not goals and consulting is a lot different than PE or IB. Refine your goals. Good luck!

Hi bizschoolprep,

thanks for your reply. You're right I need to refine my goals. As far as I've read, It seems like, given my work experience, I have no chances on PE/VC. So my decission is about MC vs. IB. I think I'm gonna spend the next two weeks just reading and talking to people in these fields I order to take some decission.

In any case, If I decide something should I discard any university or rely on some others?

where do you want to work post-MBA, ehumet? That question alone should get rid of a couple of schools on your list. If you want to focus in the European market, go to a European school; if the states is where you want to be, go to a school in the states. For either consulting or ibanking, you'd really want to go to as good of a school as possible, especially the fact that you're targeting the M/B/B range, or the GS/JPM level. If I were you and that I'd like to work in the states, I'd also consider Duke, Virginia, Haas, and/or Anderson. Basically any of the top b-schools will get you to where you'd like to be, but it still depends on how much legwork you yourself are willing to do.

Yes. Your post MBA goals should help you in school selection. Check out the companies (and the function) you would like to work for and go to their website to know where do they usually recruit from. Also, you can see this post on how to select your target business schools.
