Hello,
Please evaluate my profile.
Demography: Male, Bangladeshi, 24 years old at matriculation.
GMAT: 740 (Q49, V41, IR 7)
Education:
Bachelor of Business Administration from the top business school of the country (people from my school have gone to Stanford, Kellogg, Wharton etc.) CGPA: 3.7 (top 7% of the class)
Work Experience:
Currently working as a credit analyst in the Credit Risk Management division of a local commercial bank.
Job responsibilities
- Underwriting SME loans,
- Monitoring the health of the portfolio etc.
Two years of experience at matriculation.
Extra curricular
- Currently sponsoring an underprivileged child's education through a foundation.
- Volunteered at a program during college which prepared interactive educational resources for secondary level students. [This program was organized by MIT Public Service Center]
Why MBA now?
I want to change industry and transition into Management Consulting. I believe continuing in my current position will not help me achieve my goals.
Goals:
Short-term goal: Transition from commercial banking to Management Consulting (M/B/B if possible). (I have worked with SMEs in my country and through my job I want to help companies grow)
Long-term goal: Stay in the Management Consulting industry and specialize on helping enterprises to achieve sustainability.
Target schools:
- Sloan
- Tuck
- Darden
- Johnson
- UCLA Anderson
- Tepper
Few questions:
- I want to change both the industry and the job function at the same time. Does that make my goals unrealistic? As far as I know, most people who enter MC post MBA come from different industries and job functions.
- Is my work experience too little? [Given my goals, I think continuing in my position will not help to achieve my goals]
- The company I work for is one of the top banks in our country, but surely the admission officials will not recognize it. Is that going to hurt my chances?
I would really appreciate your feedback. Thanks in advance.
Hi,
Thanks for writing here. Please find my response below

Your age and experience favours change in industry and function both logically, but MC is something that you need to start immediately after your MBA. It is very rare that people shift to MC after a career in Banking ( I have seen many shifting from specific industry, but banking is very general)
MC is the most competitive industry so far after MBA to get into and the current economic environment does not support a lot of opportunities in the sector. With your kind of profile without relevant experience, you have to among top 2% (ideally not top 5%). Start preparing for case studies and frameworks if you ever want to get into MC.

I think you can apply, i do not see any issue here.

This is a challenge always, but you have to be smart enough to highlight the same to make them realize the same.
e.g. While working with XYZ bank (one of top 3 three banks of my country with XX capitalization and XXX branches) , I was responsible for X, y or z.
The above sentence at least gives him an idea on how strong are you as compared to other candidates from your region.
I hope it helps. I always suggest students to get in touch with a few working in MC before they embark their journey to MC, get in touch with people and learn how MC works so you are ready for the challenges and do not feel disappointed with your decision because of ignorance.
Good luck
