Exactly!!!! Grammar rules get you no where. I’ve seen every video every rule. I realised remove the obvious errors and look for the meaning. They’re really testing out logic reasoning and comprehension skills

Realised all I have to do is ^

Yes! It’s sort of toggling between grammar and meaning. Similar to how you would toggle in say QR between algebraic/geometric rules and logic.

Hey you’re already half way there if you focus on the meaning you will actually realise what the answer is. That’s how I felt in the real exam. You will realise The wrong answer choice will have the meaning changed.

Okay, I will give this strategy a shot. This makes sense to me.

Thanks gmatophobia. This is excellent. Is there a place where all Veritas prep blog theory for quants and verbal are compiled?

Hi wanted to ask that if one wants to go from a 44 to 48, what should be the accuracy level that they should target in medium and hard tagged questions on gmat club?

Re: Quant Question of the Day Chat [#permalink]
[quote="Rabab36"][quote="gmatophobia"]Data Sufficiency - Question 1

Is |x| + x > |y| + y ?

(1) xy > 0
(2) x + y |y| + y

In other words, is the sum of (distance between x and 0) and (value of x) is greater than the sum of (distance between y and 0) and (the value of y)

Statement 1

We know that x and y lie on same side side of 0.

There can be two scenarios in here.

1) If both the numbers are on the right of zero (i.e. both the numbers are positive), then which ever number is closer to zero will have a less distance from 0 than a number which is farther from zero.

At this stage we just know that the numbers lie to the right of zero, however the position is not known.

2) If both the numbers are on the left of zero then the sum of the modulus of that number and the value of the number is zero.
Hence, if anyhow we land to this scenario, we can answer a definite No.

However, without any other information both the cases are possible, this statement is not sufficient and we can rule out A and D.

Statement 2

x + y |y| + y is No.

Hence C.

Re: Quant Question of the Day Chat [#permalink]
When you see absolute and inequalties, then first think of positive/negative, then think of magnitude. So here, when I see this question, what pops up, is that if both x and y are positive, then it will depend on the value. But if both are negative then both sides will of the inequality will always be zero. We’ll keep the more complex cases of one being negative and the other positive for later, if we need them. With this mindset, I approach the statements - and quickly realise that neither is sufficient on its own, but together they imply that both x and y are negative. This both sides of the inequality is definitely a zero, and the answer to the question is a definite NO. So we don’t need to go into the more complex cases of one being positive and the other being negative.

Re: Quant Question of the Day Chat [#permalink]
Few concepts related to modulus that can sometime get tricky (can’t tell you how many times have I missed these especially in DS questions  )

Below are few statements. For each statement, answer if the statement is true or false.

Let’s see who answers all them correct :)

1) |x| always positive

2) ||x||=|x|

3) If x is an even integer, then (x)^|x| is always an even integer.

4) root(x^2) = |x|

5) If x and y are integers and have the same signs, then |x-y| = |x| - |y|

Feel free to add more to this list ... :)

Re: Quant Question of the Day Chat [#permalink]
1. no - can be 0

2. cant think of an exception - so yes

3. no. if x is 0, which is an even integer, then the expression is 1

4. yes

5. no x needs to be greater in magnitude as well

:)
